Aurora man sentenced to five years in prison for fatal April hit-and-run
A judge sentenced an Aurora man to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a fatal hit-and-run that occured in April.
Michael Graham-Hyde, 73, pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident involving death and careless driving resulting in death in connection with a crash that killed a pedestrian and his dog on April 3, according to a news release from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
In addition to his five-year sentence, Graham-Hyde will also serve an additional five years on parole and pay $18,000 in restitution, the release says.
Around 7:30 p.m. that day, Graham-Hyde was speeding in an SUV westbound on East Wesley Drive when he lost control and hit Alberto Buitrago, 65, and his two-year-old goldendoodle, Nova, who were both on the sidewalk, according to the release. Nova died instantly; Buitrago was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The Buitrago had been taking Nova on what was supposed to be a short walk around the block, his wife, Luz, told police, according to the release.
Graham-Hyde initially fled the scene of the crash before turning himself in to Aurora Municipal Center a few hours after, according to the release. He told investigators that he panicked after the crash and left the scene before learning that the victim had not survived the crash through social media.
“Leaving the scene of a crash is inexcusable,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Jacob Kremin said in the release. “This sentence reflects the seriousness of his actions and the devastation left behind for the Buitrago family.”
