Broncos at Eagles | The Denver Gazette’s picks

The Denver Gazette sports staff predicts Sunday’s game between the Broncos and Eagles in Philadelphia.

Paul Klee’s pick: Broncos 20, Eagles 18

It’s lonely here on Upset Island. How will the Broncos win in Philadelphia for the first time since Sean Payton was a college QB at Eastern Illinois in 1986? When in doubt, lean toward the best player on the field. That’s Nik Bonitto, whose 2.5 sacks will announce his Defensive Player of the Year candidacy.

Overall record: 3-1

Chris Schmaedeke’s pick: Eagles 23, Broncos 20

The Broncos drop their third straight close road game to start the season. Denver is not into morale victories, so this one will sting because once again it will be a game where the Broncos lead in the fourth but can’t hold on.

Overall record: 2-2

Chris Tomasson’s pick: Eagles 27, Broncos 24

The Broncos will play the Eagles tough and show they are a team that is getting things together. Alas, they again will lose a road game by a field goal, but at least this time it won’t be on the final play.

Overall record: 3-1

Mark Kiszla’s pick: Eagles 20, Broncos 17

So I’m saying there’s a chance for Bo Nix and the boys to pull an upset that would declare their arrival as a legit contender. But I’m not so certain they’re ready to do it in the backyard on the defending Super Bowl champs.

Overall record: 4-0

Kyle Fredrickson’s pick: Eagles 24, Broncos 21

The Broncos have proven beyond a doubt that they can dominate bad NFL teams. But what about the defending Super Bowl champs on the road? Denver lacks the winning maturity to beat the best. They will fall short in Philadelphia after a late turnover by quarterback Bo Nix ices the defeat.

Overall record: 3-1
