Has there indeed been some ‘sightseeing’ on Broncos’ trip to London to face Jets?

LONDON — Perhaps Sean Payton ended up relaxing his London edict of “no sightseeing.”

After the Broncos scored a 21-17 upset Sunday at Philadelphia, Payton was asked about their impending trip to London. He called it a business trip and said there would be “no sightseeing.”

The Broncos arrived in London on Monday morning in preparation for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and then went to where they are staying an hour north in Ware, England. So what did Denver star cornerback Pat Surtain II say when asked after a practice Wednesday at Tottenham Hotspur Training Ground in suburban Enfield what he had been up to earlier in the week?

“I went out sightseeing the past few days,’’ Surtain said. “Monday for sure. I definitely wanted to go and explore the city. I think it’s a great opportunity to get away from things and just see life differently from a different angle and see what London has to offer.”

Surtain is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, so it’s unlikely he would incur a sightseeing fine. Then again, Payton was more relaxed Wednesday when asked what players did earlier in the week away from the field, including on their day off Tuesday.

“You’d have to ask all of the guys,’’ said Payton, who had at least acknowledged Sunday that players might go out and “have some dinner.” “The (weekly) schedule would be like it normally would be. Some of them went out and ate, some of them ate back at the hotel.”

The Broncos are staying where Payton on Sunday had called the “middle of nowhere.” Outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper said Wednesday he also went to London earlier this week although he did not use the “s” word that Payton doesn’t seem to like.

“I had to check out the malls,’’ Cooper said. “I know fashion’s pretty big here. … I went shopping and got myself a little Dior sunglasses.”

Shopping also was big for Surtain on his trip to London.

“I got a meal and I went shopping,’’ Surtain said. “International shopping is pretty different so I definitely did that. … Just some clothes. Nothing too crazy. I might go back. … Lot of stuff caught my eye but I just didn’t have the time. It’s a lot of eye candy out there. I was definitely on a budget so I had to watch what I spend.”

On Wednesday, though, it was all business for the Broncos. They practiced on a soccer pitch that is used by the Tottenham Hotspurs of the Premier League and some other teams.

“I’m pretty sure they going to hate us (for) how we tore it up (Wednesday), but it’s a cool experience,’’ said wide receiver Courtland Sutton.

Portable goal posts were brought in for the Broncos, who also will practice at the facility Thursday and Friday.

“Fantastic,’’ Payton said about how Wednesday went. “The fields are great. This is my third trip here (to London), and the setup is outstanding. … The footing was good. Really good.”

Payton coached the New Orleans Saints in his two previous visits, defeating the San Diego Chargers 37-32 in 2008 and the Miami Dolphins 20-0 in 2017.

Surtain, Cooper and Sutton are among 11 players on the Broncos’ 53-man roster who played in their 2022 game in London, a 21-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium.

Among those making his first football trip here is Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, in his second season.

“It’s pretty awesome,’’ Nix said. “It’s just another game, though, and the venue changes just a little bit, and it’s good to play out of the United States, get some exposure, and see how it goes.”

Broncos players talked last season about having practiced for a week in West Virginia while on the East Coast was a good bonding experience. The Broncos bookended that trip with wins at Tampa Bay and at the Jets. Now, after beating the Eagles, they again are trying to beat the Jets to close out a 2-0 stint away from home.

“We have families, we have kids and everything that we have to handle on a day-to-day basis,’’ Cooper said. “So when you travel and you kind of separate yourself away from that, it gives more time to kind of grow as a team, grow as a unit.”

As for using much of that extra time for sightseeing, Payton still can’t be considered a fan.
