If Broncos OLB Jonah Elliss can’t play vs. Jets, rookie Que Robinson could make NFL debut | Broncos notebook

LONDON — The injury to Broncos outside linebacker Jonah Elliss could lead to rookie Que Robinson making his regular-season debut Sunday.

Elliss, a top reserve, on Thursday missed his second straight practice due to rib and shoulder injuries and is in jeopardy of not being able to face the New York Jets at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

If Elliss can’t play, Robinson, a fourth-round pick who was inactive for the first five games, could be the next man up.

“We’ll see,’’ Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said after Thursday’s practice at the Tottenham Training Ground in suburban Enfield. “Que’s had great weeks of practice. He’s ready to go. We’ll see how the roster shapes up and if Jonah is really out. But Que’s ready. If he has go in and play for us, he’s got traits that we like. He’s practiced well. He can play (special) teams. I’m excited if he gets a chance to play.”

Also Thursday, Denver defensive tackles Malcolm Roach (calf) and D.J. Jones (shoulder) and running back Tyler Badie (shoulder) all were full participants in practice after being limited Wednesday. Roach, who has been on injured reserve the first five games of the season, was designated to return Wednesday and could be activated Saturday for Sunday’s game.

Two-point talk

Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi brought up last December’s overtime loss at Cincinnati when talking about why the Broncos went for a two-point conversion midway through the fourth quarter in last Sunday’s 21-17 win at Philadelphia.

In Week 17 of 2024, the Broncos cut the deficit to 24-23 on a leaping 25-yard touchdown catch by Marvin Mims Jr. from Bo Nix with 8 seconds left. They opted to kick the extra point and lost 30-24 in overtime.

Against the Eagles, the Broncos, after trailing 17-3 early in the fourth quarter, cut the deficit to 17-16 with 7:36 remaining when Nix threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Evan Engram. They then went for two, with Nix finding Troy Franklin alone on the right side of the end zone for an 18-17 lead.

“There’s a pretty strong consensus to go for two there,’’ Lombardi said. “The Cincinnati game might have been weighing on our minds a little bit like, ‘In retrospect, you wish we would’ve gone for two there.’’’

Broncos tackle Mike McGlinchey said he “loved the call.” He admitted he “was surprised by it” but said the Broncos “play with nothing to lose.”

Happy homecoming

Not only did the Broncos last Sunday defeat the defending Super Bowl champions, they did it in McGlinchey’s hometown.

“(It) felt a little extra special being it’s my hometown, so I got to rub it in the face of a lot of family and friends over the weekend,’’ McGlinchey said. “So it was a good deal.”

McGlinchey had talked last week about how when he returns to the area he has listen to Philadelphia’s fight song “Fly, Eagles Fly.”

“At least when I hear it, I’ll know that I had the ‘W,'” he said of future returns.

Joseph’s sack plan

Joseph offered some details on how the Broncos were able to sack Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts six times.

“We asked those guys to kind of rush together and kind of cage the quarterback,’’ Joseph said. “As a whole we did that. That takes unselfish guys. We have great pass rushers that play with speed and play with counters. We asked them to rush together, and we did it. … Guys want to rush the quarterback, but rushing as a team and together is the way to go versus Hurts. We did it, so that was a proud moment for me.”

Nik Bonitto had 2.5 sacks, Alex Singleton, Eyioma Uwazurike and Ja’Quan McMillian each had one and Zach Allen shared a sack with Bonitto. But Joseph said the sacks were a byproduct of what the Broncos wanted to do.

“(Hurts) had one scramble for 3 yards,’’ Joseph said. “That was the goal. The goal wasn’t to sack him, it was to contain him so they didn’t run around on us. That was done.”

Skinner’s late-game action

Broncos safety JL Skinner played his first defensive snaps of the season on the final four plays at Philadelphia. It was adventurous.

With the Eagles trailing 21-17 and facing fourth-and-7 at their 29, Skinner was called for an 18-yard pass interference call on Dallas Goedert, giving them a first down at their 47. With Philadelphia having first-and-10 at the Denver 29 with 9 seconds left, Skinner was thought by some to have interfered again with Goedert just shy of the goal line but no flag was dropped.

Joseph said the 6-foot-4 Skinner, who has played sparingly from scrimmage in his first three seasons, primarily was in the game to protect against the Hail Mary. The Eagles threw an incomplete Hail Mary into the end zone on the game’s final play.

“He’s our tallest (defensive back), so we want some height back there to kind of jump and knock the ball down,’’ Joseph said.

Overall, Joseph said, Skinner will “be better at his job with the penalty.”

Rizzi’s brush with a star

Broncos special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi will be on the sideline Sunday for a fifth time in London. He recalled a funny moment from one of his previous trips.

Rizzi was special teams coordinator for the Miami Dolphins when they went to London in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and had that job for the New Orleans Saints when they made the trip in 2022.

“I was walking in Wembley Stadium in the tunnel (and) this guy kind of brushed by and he said, ‘Excuse me, coach,’ and I made it on the field,’’ Rizzi said about a visit with the Dolphins. “And they were like, ‘Rizz, did you know who that was?’ I’m like, ‘No.’ It was the ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ guy, Johnny Depp. I had to get out of the way for Johnny Depp and I didn’t even know who he was.”

LONDON — It’s the best decision the Broncos never made. Instead of having the NFL’s top defensive player on their side, they could be stuck with a bust who’s about to get run out of the Big Apple. Denver would not be home to the Super Bowl contender coach Sean Payton likes to brag about […]
