Aurora police arrest man who allegedly killed another driver during high-speed chase Thursday

Aurora Police Department officers arrested a man on felony charges Thursday on suspicion of killing another driver while trying to evade authorities during a high-speed chase.

Don Mai Phan, 25 of Aurora, was booked into the Aurora Municipal Detention Center at around 7 p.m. Thursday and faces felony charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding, as well as misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and speeding, in connection with a fatal crash that took place at the intersection of East Iliff Avenue and South Blackhawk Street Thursday afternoon, according to a news release from the APD.

The victim — a 25-year-old male driver of a Honda sedan — was making a lefthand turn onto Iliff Avenue when Phan ran a red light and crashed into the car, according to the release. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The incident first began around 2 p.m. Thursday when an Aurora police officer observed a white BMW sedan driving at around 84 mph in a 65 mph zone on northbound Interstate 225, according to the release. The driver of the sedan, later identified as Phan, continued to speed and exited the highway at East Iliff Avenue as the officer attempted to catch up and initiate a traffic stop.

Phan continued driving east on Iliff Avenue and allegedly ran a red light at South Blackhawk Street, crashing into the Honda sedan and killing its driver, the release says. The motorcycle officer arrived about 30 seconds later and quickly detained Phan as well as the 26-year-old male passenger in the BMW.

Phan and the passenger were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the release. Debris from the crash hit two additional vehicles that were stopped at the intersection, but no other injuries were reported.

The victim will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office in the coming days pending autopsy and notification of family. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
