Tomasson’s scouting report: Broncos vs. Jets
The Denver Gazette’s Chris Tomasson gives his scouting report for Sunday’s game between the Broncos (3-2) and Jets (0-5) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Offense
The Broncos, after some early-season inconsistency, have run well recently and seek to continue that trend against the Jets. In last Sunday’s 21-17 upset win at Philadelphia, the Broncos ran for 130 yards, including 79 by J.K. Dobbins. Quarterback Bo Nix has remained resilient, bouncing back from a shaky first half against the Eagles, as Denver overcame a 17-3 deficit early in the fourth quarter. Despite being winless, the Jets’ offense has not been dismal. Quarterback Justin Fields, who missed one game due to injury, has thrown for 754 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions and has run for 204 yards. Running back Breece Hall, who had 994 yards in 2023 and 876 in 2024, is on pace for his first 1,000-yard season with 351.
Advantage: Broncos
Defense
Denver’s unit, after having struggles in early-season losses at Indianapolis and the Los Angeles Chargers, has been strong the past two games and is No. 2 in the NFL in scoring defense and No. 5 in total defense. Edge rusher Nik Bonitto leads the league with seven sacks. Pat Surtain II is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year but he is ranked by Pro Football Focus this year just No. 62 out of 87 cornerbacks. The Jets are No. 31 in the NFL in points allowed and No. 20 in total defense. They have no interceptions. Still, they have cornerback Sauce Gardner, a two-time first-team All-Pro, and nose tackle Quinnen Williams, a three-time Pro Bowl selection.
Advantage: Broncos
Coaching
Denver’s Sean Payton is looking to go 3-0 in London, having previously led New Orleans in the city to a 37-32 win over the San Diego Chargers in 2008 and a 20-0 win over Miami in 2017. With the victory at Philadelphia, Payton moved into a tie for No. 14 on the all-time NFL coaching wins list with 173, passing mentor Bill Parcells. The Jets’ Aaron Glenn, a former assistant under Payton in New Orleans, is in his first year as a head coach. It hasn’t gone well so far. The Jets are the NFL’s only remaining winless team, and Glenn, a former NFL defensive back who was Detroit’s defensive coordinator the previous four years, has yet to make much of an impact on that side of the ball.
Advantage: Broncos
Intangibles
The Broncos had the experience last season of Payton taking the team away from Denver for a week and going 2-0. Last season, they bookended wins at Tampa Bay and at the Jets around a week in West Virginia. Now, after beating the Eagles, they’re trying to conclude another 2-0 trip with another win over the Jets. Even though it is a Jets home game, the Broncos are expected to have more fans on hand Sunday. Despite their record, the Jets have been competitive, losing two games by two points and another by six. Fields did lead Pittsburgh to a 13-6 win at Denver in Week 2 last season and he had a career-high 335 yards passing with four touchdowns for Chicago in a 31-28 loss to the Broncos in Week 4 of 2023.
