Broncos vs. Jets grades: Defense earns ‘A+’ in London

It wasn’t pretty, but the Broncos pulled out a 13-11 win over the New York Jets on Sunday in London. Here are the grades from the win:
Offense
A promising start turned into an offensive dud for Denver. Quarterback Bo Nix and the offense were rolling in the first quarter, which led to 10 points. After that, the Broncos did nothing of substance and scored only three points. The run game struggled all day as J.K. Dobbins had just 40 yards on 14 carries. An offensive output like this would result in a loss in most games, but it was saved by the dominant Denver defense. Nix led a drive late in the fourth for the game-winning field goal with 5 minutes left.
Grade: D
Defense
The best defense in the league showed up in London. The Broncos had nine sacks, including two by Jonathon Cooper and 1.5 from Justin Strnad. Nik Bonitto chipped in with another timely sack. The Jets had only 82 total yards and kicked three field goals. Safety Talanoa Hufanga made the play of the game, knocking the ball away from Jets receiver Garrett Wilson with under 2 minutes to go. Denver needed this performance to get the win, with the offense no-showing in the second half.
Grade: A+
Special teams
This unit almost cost the Broncos the game. The Jets converted a fake punt that had Broncos coaches scrambling on the sidelines even though it seemed like they knew it was coming. New York had a couple of huge kickoff returns, including a 72-yarder by Kenu Nwangwu that set up a field goal. Wil Lutz hit a 57-yard field goal and a 27-yarder that became the game-winner.
Grade: C
Coaching
The Broncos have a penalty problem. A holding call in the end zone led to a safety, and a bad false start on Pat Bryant highlighted another six penalties for Denver. Coach Sean Payton talks about cleaning it up, but it hasn’t happened yet. On the positive side, which head coach job is defensive coordinator Vance Joseph getting?
