Man falls 2 stories at Sugar Mill near Longmont
A 23-year-old man was rescued from the Sugarmill property in the 11900 block of Sugarmill Rd in Boulder County on Sunday.
The “Sugarmill” in Longmont refers to the historic, abandoned Great Western Sugar Factory at 11801 Sugar Mill Road, which closed in 1977 and has been the site of frequent fires due to vandalism and trespassing.
According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), shortly after 11 p.m., the man called 911 and reported he had fallen a significant distance and was injured inside of the property.
Multiple personnel from the BCSO, Longmont Police Department, Mountain View Fire Rescue and Boulder Rural Fire Rescue responded, utilizing a drone to help locate the man.
According to the sheriff’s office, it was discovered that the man had likely fallen approximately two stories or 20 feet. Fire personnel were able to gain access to him after utilizing a saw to cut through an exterior wall to gain the most direct and safe access to him.
BCSO said the man was extricated and transported to a local hospital for treatment, and had sustained severe injuries to his face and limbs.
BCSO said several other people were also contacted at the property and all were issued citations for trespassing.
BCSO said “this is a stark reminder that it is illegal and dangerous to trespass on the Sugarmill property and violators will be held accountable.”
The BCSO did not mention if any other people were injured nor disclosed information about the injured man’s condition further.
