Westbound & Down takes home six medals, most of any competitor, at 2025 Great American Beer Festival
As the tap ran dry on the 2025 Great American Beer Festival on Saturday, one of Colorado’s own stood atop the pack.
Westbound & Down Brewing Co. of Lafayette took home six medals, more than any of the over 1,500 other individual competitors from all 50 states and Washington D.C., according to a Saturday announcement. The brewery’s How the West Was One: Mosaic beat out 299 other entries to win gold in the West Coast IPA category, the second-most entered category in the contest, for one of the Westbound’s three first-place finishes.
The company also took home Brewery and Brewer of the Year in the 5,0001 – 15,000 barrels category, and was one of three different Colorado breweries to win the award in their respective production categories. The others were Denver’s River North Brewery (1,001 – 2,000 barrels) and Golden’s Cannonball Creek Brewing Co. (501 – 1,000 barrels).
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Westbound is on a mission to make the best beer in the country and bring pride and glory back to Colorado craft beer, and we did it today,” said Jake Gardner, co-owner and director of Brewing Operations for Westbound & Down Brewing in a news release. “It was a HUGE day for Colorado beer, and it was so great seeing three of us win brewery of the year honors.”
The awards capped off the 39th annual iteration of the three-day event at the Colorado Convention Center, which featured over 8,000 different beers and awarded 347 medals to 273 different competitors, according to the announcement.
Just behind Westbound & Down was Aurora’s Haykin Family Cider, which brought home four medals, including gold finishes in the Experimental, Barrel-Aged or Specialty Cider and Single Varietal Cider categories. Haykin was one of just two cideries to win gold in multiple categories.

Glenwood Springs-based Glenwood Canyon Brewing Co.’s Festbier beat out 185 other entries in the Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest category to win gold in what ended up being the brewery’s only medal.
Among more unique entries, The Sandlot Brewery at Coors Field won gold in the Fruit Wheat Beer category for its Key Lime Pie in the Sky. River North Brewery, also from Denver, won one of its two gold medals for its Squirrels Just Want to Have Fun entry in the Coffee Beer category.
Altogether, 23 Colorado breweries and cideries took home 39 medals in the event’s competition category. Seventeen of those medals were gold, placing the state behind only California’s 21 in the overall competition.
“Year after year, the Great American Beer Festival sets the bar for American brewing (and for the second year in a row, cidermaking). The 2025 competition was no exception,” said Chris Williams, competition director for the Brewers Association, in the release. “There were extremely strong showings from numerous breweries and cidermakers across the U.S., maximizing the level of competition among the entire competition community.”
The full list of the 2025 medal winners can be found on the festival’s website.
