ILB Justin Strnad ‘not sure’ about possible NFL fine for contact with referee | Broncos notebook
ENGLEWOOD — Broncos inside linebacker Justin Strnad made contact with an official in the aftermath of a game-winning field goal to beat the Giants.
Strnad will be fined by the NFL, according to Troy Vincent, the league’s executive vice president of football operations in a Thursday evening interview with Pro Football Talk.
Strnad discussed the scenario and potential league discipline from his locker stall earlier Thursday after practice at Broncos Park. The incident was captured on video by Alex Wilcox, a sports reporter and producer for KCNC-TV (CBS), on Sunday at Empower Field.
Kicker Wil Lutz just hit the 39-yard game-winning field goal when chaos followed. Strand bumped into referee Brad Allen, and Strnad appeared to shove him as he went past to celebrate with teammates. Allen is the same referee whom inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw chased and yelled at in the chaos.
Strand described the scene as a “mosh pit” as players collided at midfield.
“I really just remember going to celebrate with the team after an obviously huge moment, a game-winning field goal. “That stuff kind of happened so fast. I didn’t even really honestly think about like it right after the game. … With everything going on, it kind of became a big story.”
Does Strnad expect to be fined by the NFL?
“I’m not sure about that,” Strnad said. “So, we’ll see.”
The Broncos (5-2) host the Cowboys (3-3-1) on Sunday at Empower Field. Strand is back in a starting role with Greenlaw serving a one-game suspension for his confrontation with Allen. Strand explained his mindset entering Week 8.
“Keep attacking it how we have been,” Strnad said. “Obviously, we have a big challenge ahead with the Cowboys. They’re playing great this year. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Fast starts
Joe Lombardi has a simple solution to fix a slow-starting offense.
“I just told the guys to start doing some of that fourth quarter stuff a little earlier,” the Broncos offensive coordinator quipped on Thursday at Broncos Park.
The Broncos dropped 33 points in the fourth quarter, after no scoring in the first three quarters, to beat the Giants. Tight end Evan Engram explained what will change to help reverse that trend against Dallas.
“The execution has to be a lot better early,” Engram said. “We just can’t live like that. We can’t live in that world of slow starts and getting going late. Obviously, it’s the NFL. There’s going to be roller coasters. There’s going to be ups and downs. There’s going to be adversity. … We want to be more intent and get the results a little bit sooner than we have as of late.”
Briefly
The Broncos have a clean injury report. Outside linebacker Jonah Ellis (shoulder) went from limited to a full participant on Thursday. Right tackle Mike McGlinchey (ankle/foot) also fully participated in practice. … Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph defended cornerback Riley Moss for his controversial defensive pass interference penalty against the Giants that led to a fourth-quarter touchdown. Joseph said, “I wouldn’t coach any differently,” and that Moss has “the hardest job on our defense weekly.” … Safety Devon Key leads the Broncos in special teams snaps (81% of total) and their leader in tackles (13) on coverage units. On Thursday, special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi said, “Nothing but positives to say about him. He’s really had a great start to this season.”
