Woody Paige: Nix, Prescott showdown reminds of what might have been
The Bo-Dak Duel will be the best in the west and all the rest on Sunday.
The Man Who Would Have Been King in Colorado then clashes with The QB who Is leading the Broncos now. Dallas and Denver, each a city without pity which loathes the other in all sports and life, confront again, and Bo Nix and Dak Prescott play for the first time.
Get this: Nix threw for two and ran for two touchdowns in last Sunday’s Mercurial Magical Mystery Miracle at Mile High. But, there’s this: Prescott passed for three touchdowns and rushed for one in a 40-40 tie earlier this season against the Packers. Want more? Dak has 3, 4, 3 and 3 touchdowns in the air for the Cowboys his past four games. Nix, the winning quarterback in the Broncos’ four straight victories, connected on six touchdown passes and scored himself on three other drives.
The Cowboys have reached 40 points in three games this season. Yet, the Broncos have given up 17 or fewer points in four 2025 contests. Dallas is ranked first offensively, Denver third defensively.
Oh, the Broncos have scored 40 or more against the Cowboys four times historically.
We love us some Cowboys and Horses games dating to Super Bowl XII in New Orleans 47 years ago. After Dallas dumped Denver 27-10 the Cowboys were first referred to by NFL Films as “America’s Team’’.
In the past week Broncos defensive end John Franklin-Myers disagreed. “You ask me, the Broncos are America’s team.”
Well, after scoring 33 points in the fourth quarter and conquering the Giants on a last-play field goal, the Broncos certainly were America’s flavor du jour and are alone in the AFC West and tied for second overall in the AFC with a 5-2 record. The Cowboys were clobbering the Commanders 44-22 and remain second in the NFC East at 3-3-1.
America’s Team?
The latest “watchability rating” poll rates the Cowboys 14th in popularity, the Broncos’ 15th.
The Broncos haven’t won a Super Bowl since 50 and possess three championships in history, while the Cowboys have five trophies, but not a sniff since 1996.
The Broncos haven’t lost in seven games to the ‘Boys since after ’95.
Prescott is 0-2 vs. the Broncos.
Could Dallas produce back-to-back 40-plus performances? Or will Denver dominate the fourth quarter as it has so far with 70 points?
How about another 51-48 like in 2013? Sean Payton was on the Cowboys side as offensive coordinator when the Broncos won in 2005. As a side note Payton has beat, with the Broncos, two of the teams he served as an assistant (Eagles and Giants) and the Saints, for whom he was head coach. A triumph over the Cowboys would give him a Sean Sweep over former friends who are foes.
In comparison, over their first 24 regular-season games, John Elway had a 16-8 record, Nix 15-9.
Prescott was 18-6 in his first 24 regular-season games with the Cowboys as a rookie-sophomore in 2016-17.
Dak’s 10 seasons might have been with the Broncos instead of the Cowboys – except for several faux pas or fake passes.
At the 2016 Senior Bowl the Broncos, slotted next-to-last in the draft’s first round and in dire need of a quarterback, were quite intrigued with Mississippi State’s Prescott, who showed well in practices and was named the game’s MVP. However, funny (weird) things literally happened on his way to Denver. On March 12 Prescott was stopped in Clarksdale, Miss., for speeding and suspicion of DUI, although the charges would be dropped eventually; Prescott held a Pro Day in front of 30 scouts, including a couple from Denver, and he was invited for a visit to the Broncos’ Dove Valley.
Training in Orlando, Prescott missed his flight to Denver, blaming traffic, and didn’t arrive until late at night after a scheduled dinner with John Elway and Gary Kubiak. I was told at the time the two incidents and his 6-foot-2 frame curdled the Broncos on Prescott. Instead, they traded up from 31st to 26th to pick Paxton Lynch (who played at the University of Memphis) and was five inches taller. Elway liked height in QBs.
A potential trade with Dallas, who also coveted Lynch, was squelched. Instead, the Cowboys settled for Prescott 135th in the fourth round. The Broncos could have chosen him two rounds before.
Everybody knows what happened. Prescott has started 129 games. The Broncos started a dozen quarterbacks before drafting Nix.
Dak and Bo: Finally, Sunday the twain shall meet. The game’s winner will receive the Broncowboys Bo-Dak America’s Team Cup.
