Urban explorers “fueled by social media challenges” blamed for breaking into former Colorado theater
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking help from the public in identifying a group of “urban explorers” who allegedly broke into Littleton’s Elvis Cinema in recent days. Elvis Cinema has been closed since February 2023, with KDVR reporting that it’s currently leased by a local church.
Per the law enforcement report, the group damaged the doors and interior, though nothing was stolen.
“The thrill of trespassing turned into a felony-level mistake,” stated the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office noted that incidents of this nature are becoming a growing issue, “fueled by social media challenges that encourage people to sneak into vacant buildings.”
“What might seem like a harmless adventure can lead to serious charges,” noted the sheriff’s office.
“The juice isn’t worth the squeeze,” said Investigator Jon Zinanti. “Is it worth a couple likes on TikTok or Instagram to go commit a felony and get busted for it?”
The building that was previously home to Elvis Cinema was first opened as a theater in 1983. Several changes in ownership occurred during its 40-year stint.
Anyone who is able to help identify the individuals has been asked to contact the sheriff’s office tip line at 303-271-5612.
