The popular Friday Night Ice ice climbing event is set to return to Colorado this winter, and if you’re looking to stick some picks into the wall on a budget in a more approachable environment, there’s perhaps no better deal in the Centennial State.

Hosted by Front Range Climbing Company on a top-roped human-built ice wall found in the Lake George area, Friday Night Ice invites those with at least some ice climbing experience to attend one of their $40 four-hour Friday sessions set to take place throughout the winter season. For comparison, similar experiences can often cost $200 or more.

This year, it’s planned for the South Platte Ice Wall to feature 10 unique routes of varying difficulty once its filled in, with the first Friday Night Ice date set for January 9 at this time (though it looks like January 2 may be a possibility, too). Available dates currently stretch into mid-April. Each night is limited to 24 climbers, ensuring that everyone will have plenty of time on the ice.

It’s worth noting that while this event is great for those dipping their toes into ice climbing, it’s not for true first-timers. Front Range Climbing Company recommends that first-timers partake in a guided private climb first. Not only will this help make Friday Night Ice a safer experience, the development of basic skills attained during a privately guided climb are sure to make future ice climbing experiences more fun.

Climbers attending Friday Night Ice should also have strong top-rope belaying abilities. Belaying in an ice climbing scenario can be more difficult than standard rock climbing belaying, as stiff ropes and a snowy ground make rope handling skills and the ability to keep a firm footing crucial.

To those attending Friday Night Ice, be warned – it can be quite frigid, so you’ll want to bundle up. There will be a fire pit, but on the wall, it’s very cold. Most of the event is after dark, with a run-time of 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

It’s encouraged that attendees bring their own gear sans a rope, but limited boot, crampon, and ice tool rentals are also available.
