Elevated TE Marcedes Lewis, 41, about to become oldest Broncos player ever but Craig Morton doesn’t ‘give a hoot’

HOUSTON – Tight end Marcedes Lewis is about to knock Craig Morton out of the Broncos record book, but the former quarterback doesn’t care in the slightest.

The Broncos on Saturday elevated Lewis, 41, from the practice squad and he is expected to play Sunday against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium. That would make him the oldest player to take the field in the team’s 66-season history.

Lewis is in line to top Morton for being the oldest player to appear in a Denver regular-season game. Morton was 39 years, 9 months, 16 days when he appeared in his final NFL game on Nov. 21, 1982. Counting the postseason, quarterback Peyton Manning was 39 years, 10 months, 14 days when he concluded his career by helping the Broncos to a win in Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7, 2016.

“I don’t give a hoot,’’ Morton, 82, told The Denver Gazette on Saturday about Lewis about to break his regular-season mark. “So that’s my answer. … Good for him.”

Morton said he has no intention to disparage Lewis, who is in his 20th NFL season. He said he didn’t even know he was the oldest regular-season player to suit up for Denver and said he has no problem being “out of every record book.”

The Broncos (6-2) on Saturday also elevated wide receiver and returner Michael Bandy from the practice squad to take the place of receiver-returner Marvin Mims Jr., who suffered a concussion in last Sunday’s 44-34 win over Dallas and was ruled out Friday. The Broncos also announced that left guard Alex Palczewski is questionable for Sunday’s game due to an illness, but he did make the trip to Houston.

Lewis was signed last Wednesday to the practice squad after tight end Nate Adkins suffered a knee injury against the Cowboys. After his third practice with the team, Broncos coach Sean Payton said Friday it was “absolutely” possible Lewis would be elevated. Lewis, a blocking specialist, is in line to be Denver’s third tight end against the Texans, after starter Evan Engram and Adam Trautman.

Morton played in the NFL from 1965-82, including 1977-82 with the Broncos. He was the team’s regular starting quarterback at 38 in 1981, when he threw for a career-high 3,195 yards, but moved into a reserve role during his final season of 1982.

“Any time you watch a football game or baseball game, all they want to do is talk about records,’’ Morton said from his home in Mill Valley, Calif. “What the heck. Let’s just play the game and huddle up and break the huddle and kick some butt. … I’ve never heard about (his longevity record) and never thought of it.”

Lewis also is in line to become the second-oldest active player in the NFL after Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is an older 41.

The Broncos didn’t have a lot of injuries prior to the game against the Cowboys, but they will enter Sunday’s game the most banged-up they have been all season. In addition to Mims and Adkins, star cornerback Pat Surtain II was also hurt against Dallas and has been ruled out for Sunday.

The Broncos finalized a decision Saturday not to put Surtain or Adkins on injured reserve, which requires that a player miss at least four games. With the Broncos having an upcoming bye, a move on either would have resulted in a five-week absence.

If Palczewski can’t play, the Broncos would be down to a fourth different starting left guard in five games. Ben Powers was the starter in the first five games before undergoing biceps surgery and being placed on injured reserve. Matt Peart started in Week 6 before suffering a knee injury and being placed on injured reserve.

Palczewski then took over for the past two games. Available if needed Sunday at left guard are Calvin Throckmorton and Alex Forsyth.

As for Lewis, Morton wondered how long his expected Broncos record would last.

“There will be a 43-year-old signed some day,’’ he said.

Mark Kiszla: How the heck did odd couple of Sean Payton and George Paton become brothers in orange?

We expected Sean Payton and George Paton to be frenemies. We were wrong. Heck, in the beginning, nearly three years ago, this relationship of the P&P Boys seemed doomed to end with them PO’d with each other. Instead, the coach and general manager of the Broncos have become brothers in orange. It might be the […]
