Broncos at Texans grades: Another comeback powers Broncos to sixth straight win

The Broncos won their sixth straight game on Sunday in Houston against the Texans. Here are the grades from the 18-15 victory:

Offense

Sunday’s game was very similar to a lot of Broncos games this year. The Denver offense struggled to score points in the first three quarters. The fourth quarter started, and Denver scored 11 points with quarterback Bo Nix finding his groove. Nix was bad for most of the game and had the second game of his career with an under 50% completion percentage. But when it mattered most, Nix came up big. Rookie RJ Harvey continues to shine in the passing game with 61 yards and a touchdown. The offense still needs more against good defenses.

Grade: C

Defense

While the offense struggled, the Denver defense kept the Broncos in the game. It was backup quarterback Davis Mills for Houston, but Denver held the Texans to just five field goals in the win. Denver had four sacks and limited Houston to 3-for-17 on third down. It was a strong showing for this group without All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain.

Grade: A

Special teams

This group almost cost the Broncos the game. Michael Bandy, who replaced the injured Marvin Mims as the punt returner, muffed a punt to help set up a Texans’ field goal. Denver also gave up a 45-yard punt return and had a personal foul on another. But Wil Lutz, who also had a field goal blocked, drilled the game-winner, and rookie Jeremy Crawshaw flipped field position for Denver a couple of times. The Broncos need a complete special-teams performance.

Grade: C

Coaching

Sean Payton’s play-calling will come under question once again. Nix attempted 37 passes while Denver had only 23 rushing attempts. It seemed like another game where Patyon was forcing the game into Nix’s hands instead of using J.K. Dobbins and Harvey. In the end, the Broncos got the win, so things worked out. Denver only committed four penalties, which is better than it has been in previous weeks.
