Will the Broncos ignore special teams issues until it bites them in playoffs? | Broncos cheers and boos
Two cheers and two boos from Denver’s 18-15 win over the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on Sunday:
Cheers!
…. to Broncos comebacks, from John Elway to Tim Tebow to Bo Nix. The Broncos have faced a fourth-quarter deficit in four of the past five games — and won all four. By scoring the final 11 points to stun the Texans, the Broncos jumped into the No. 2 spot in the AFC playoff picture with a 91% chance of making the playoffs, according to NFL.com. How’s your heart doing?
Boo…
…. the injury to Texans quarterback CJ Stroud, whose exit in the second quarter puts an asterisk on Denver’s win. Credit the officials for picking up the flag on Kris Abrams-Draine, who hit Stroud in the chest, not the dome. But it’s still a bummer we didn’t get a head-to-head showdown between Stroud and Nix, a pair of mid-20s quarterbacks who aren’t going anywhere.
Cheers!
…. to the NFL schedule makers, who made sure the best team in the AFC West will win the division. The Broncos are entering Week 10 and still have five games against division rivals, including four against the Raiders and Chiefs. The AFC West will be decided in the best way, via head-to-head competition. Close 4-1 vs. the West and the Broncos dethrone the Chiefs.
Boo…
…. special teams for the Broncos, who can’t continue to ignore the elephant in the room until it bites them in the playoffs. Just a couple of days after Sean Payton scoffed at the suggestion special teams are a serious problem, the Broncos muffed a punt, allowed a 45-yard punt return and missed a field goal. Good luck with that when it’s 25 degrees at New England in January.
