One dead, suspect released after shooting in Westminster Tuesday night

A man died in the hospital and a suspect was released from custody after a shooting in Westminster Tuesday night.

The shooting, which took place at a motel near the intersection of 120th Avenue and Melody Drive around 10 p.m. Tuesday, began when two men started fighting with one another, according to a Wednesday social media post from the Westminster Police Department.

A Google Maps search of the area indicates that there is a Super 8 Motel directly adjacent to the intersection.

When police arrived on the scene, they found one adult man inside the motel suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the post. He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Police initially took another adult man into custody in relation to the shooting, but he was released after questioning and consultation with the District Attorney’s Office, the post says. Authorities are not searching for additional suspects at this time and do not believe there is an active threat to the community.

Officials did not say exactly what information was revealed during that questioning when asked Wednesday morning, or why police are not seeking additional suspects of the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation. They did say that they do not believe the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

“These types of investigations are often sensitive and more complex than they may appear,” the department said in the post.

The Adams County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity pending notification of family and an autopsy.
