Broncos vs. Raiders grades: High marks for defense in Denver’s home victory
The Broncos won their seventh consecutive game Thursday against the Raiders. Here are grades from the 10-7 victory at Empower Field.
Offense
The Broncos looked sluggish yet again to begin the night with four consecutive three-and-out drives. They didn’t gain a first down until the second quarter when J.K. Dobbins rushed for 13 yards, but four plays later, quarterback Bo Nix hit wide receiver Troy Franklin for a touchdown. Denver later squandered good field position and Nix got intercepted twice.
Grade: D
Defense
The Raiders led 7-0 midway through the first quarter when Ashton Jeanty ran 4 yards into the end zone. It was the lone blemish from a dominant defensive performance. The Broncos logged six sacks, including multiple that knocked Las Vegas out of field-goal range. Outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman also picked off Raiders quarterback Geno Smith and returned it 23 yards.
Grade: A
Special teams
Swirling winds at Empower Field made for difficult punting conditions. Just ask Jeremy Crawshaw. He seemed to catch the yips with shanked punts of 30, 36 and 38 yards all in the first half. Things improved in the second half when safety JL Skinner blocked a punt recovered by running back Tyler Badie. Wil Lutz put the Broncos ahead, 10-7, with a 32-yard field goal.
Grade: B
Coaching
Sean Payton called a trick play on third-and-short in the third quarter from midfield that was intended for wide receiver Courtland Sutton to throw the football. It failed miserably for a short loss. The Broncos attempted a 59-yard field goal on the next play, and Lutz’s attempt fell short. It was a head scratching sequence that epitomized a weird Thursday night football game.
Grade: C
