6 DUI suspects arrested at memorial checkpoint for fallen Golden officer
Multiple Jefferson County law enforcement agencies conducted a DUI checkpoint on Thursday in honor of a fallen Golden Police Department officer who died on the same date last year.
The Colorado State Patrol, in partnership with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Golden Police Department and other agencies, held a checkpoint and increased patrol on Highway 6 in Golden Thursday evening, according to a news release from CSP.
The checkpoint and patrol led to 892 total contacts and six impaired driving arrests, according to the release.
The idea stemmed from the death of 33-year-old Ofc. Evan Dunn.
Stephen Geer, a former Colorado School of Mines mechanical engineering professor, crashed into a vehicle parked at another crash on Highway 58 around 5 p.m., pushing the parked vehicle into two officers and killing Dunn.
Dunn and another officer, Bethany Grusing, were pinned under the vehicle during the crash.
Dunn’s death was the first on-duty death in the department’s history.
Geer pleaded guilty to one count of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular assault in October and is scheduled to be sentenced in January.
“The tragic loss of Officer Dunn’s life serves as a sobering reminder of the responsibilities drivers hold when getting behind the wheel. Impaired driving is never the right option and can have devastating consequences,” said Capt. Justin Williams of CSP. “This sobriety checkpoint is intended to send a loud and clear reminder that it is up to every driver to keep our roads safe and prevent another senseless loss.”
