Broncos’ offense searching for answers after back-to-back duds: ‘We’ve got to pick up the slack’

The celebration of a seventh consecutive victory wrapped up in the Broncos locker room with players filing out Thursday night toward the exit.

There was plenty to smile about: an 8-2 record, one of the NFL’s best defenses and a long weekend to rest with pivotal division games on the horizon. Yet tight end Adam Trautman could not ignore the ugly reality of an otherwise surging Broncos team following a 10-7 win over the Raiders.

Their offense is stuck in a two-game funk.

“At some point, we’ve got to pick up the slack,” Trautman said. “We know that and we take full accountability for that.”

Everything clicked in Week 8 when quarterback Bo Nix orchestrated six touchdown drives in a 44-24 home win over the Cowboys. Denver failed to replicate similar offensive success in subsequent victories over the Texans (18-15) and Raiders (10-7).

It’s been ugly over that two-game span. Check the stats.

Nix completed 52% of his passes with the same number of touchdowns (three) and interceptions (three). The offense went 11 of 30 on third-down attempts. They averaged just 3.7 yards per rush. Jeremy Crawshaw punted 15 times.

“We have to do better,” Nix said.

On Thursday night, late against Las Vegas, the home crowd showcased its disgust after another failed drive with loud booing at Empower Field at Mile High. Running back J.K. Dobbins sympathized with Broncos Country.

“I mean, they should (boo),” Dobbins said. “We’re not very good at times. So, they should be mad, because we have so much talent. We’ve just got to get it together.”

Dobbins left the game briefly in the third quarter with an apparent lower-leg injury. It took place when Raiders defensive end Tyree Wilson dragged Dobbins down with what looked like a hip-drop tackle, which were outlawed by the NFL in 2024. He still returned to play in the fourth quarter.

On Friday, Dobbins posted on social media: “BAN OR ATLEAST CALL THE (expletive) HIP DROP TACKLE!” He also vented frustration in the postgame locker room.

“The defense is winning us the games, and we’re not helping them. We’re not doing them any justice,” Dobbins said. “I feel bad the way we play on offense and the way they play on defense. Because they’re doing so great and then we’re doing so bad. They’re our brothers, too. … We can’t keep doing that to them. We’ll figure it out as an offense.”

Outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper believes their current model for winning ugly is sustainable “for now,” a big caveat. Time is running out to play a complete game when it matters most.

“We do have to figure it out before we get into the playoffs. We can’t be in these back-and-forth, fourth-quarter comebacks, stuff like that,” Cooper said. “We really have to figure it out and clean up the details. We’ve got to minimize our penalties and minimize our mistakes. Just execute even better.”

The Broncos host the Chiefs (5-4) in Week 11 at Empower Field. Another offensive dud might not be enough to beat the nine-time defending AFC West champions. Trautman believes a lack of consistency is holding Denver back from its offensive potential.

“Whatever that is, we have to find it,” Trautman said. “And we have to find it fast.”
