No. 9 Denver hockey takes down No. 4 Western Michigan in Frozen Four rematch
Game one of the Frozen Four rematch series went to the Pioneers.
After losing to Western Michigan in a national semifinal in March, No. 9 Denver (5-3-1) went on the road and took down the defending national champions 3-1 Friday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The No. 4 Broncos (5-4-0) took a 1-0 lead a little over 5 minutes into the game on a goal by Zaccharya Wisdom, but that’s the only shot that would get past freshman DU goaltender Quentin Miller.
That was also the only scoring of the first two periods as the Pioneers trailed 1-0 after 40 minutes of hockey.
Junior Kieran Cebrian scored his second goal of the season a little under 7 minutes into the third period before defenseman Eric Jamieson got his fourth goal of his freshman season a few minutes later to give DU its first lead of the night.
That mark by Jamieson proved to be the game-winning goal as fellow defenseman Eric Pohlkamp scored into an empty net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the final minute to seal the victory.
Miller stopped 35 of 36 shots as he improved to 4-2-1 in his seven starts so far this season.
The Pioneers and Broncos conclude the weekend series at 4 p.m. Saturday with coverage on NCHC.tv and 104.3 FM.
