Avalanche sign Gavin Brindley to two-year contract extension
It’s safe to say the Avalanche like what they’ve seen from young Gavin Brindley.
The organization on Tuesday announced it has signed the 21-year-old forward to a two-year contract extension that will lock him up through the end of the 2027-28 season. Acquired over the summer from the Columbus Blue Jackets, Brindley has been a pleasant surprise for the team to start the season, earning a roster spot right out of training camp and consistently earning the praise of coach Jared Bednar.
The contract will carry a cap hit of $875,000, according to a league source.
Brindley has five points in 14 games. During Sunday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, Brindley was elevated to the top line with Nathan MacKinnon, drawing a penalty late in regulation that helped the Avalanche take the lead late. When the game went to overtime, Bednar called Brindley’s number and the Florida native repaid him, scoring the overtime winner.
The overtime goal made Brindley the seventh-youngest player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to record an overtime goal in franchise history.
Brindley said Tuesday the trade last summer put a chip on his shoulder.
“Good to get a fresh start somewhere else,” Brindley said. “Going through something like that (so) young and experiencing that already is a positive and also (a) negative, as well.”
His coach believes this is just the beginning.
“I think he can be a top-six forward in this league,” Bednar said. “He plays bigger than his size; the motor, the relentlessness, the skill level and the brain to go with it is all there. I think (his ceiling) is really high.”
