Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher, iconic broadcaster Jim Nantz fired up as CBS brings heavy hitters for Broncos vs. Chiefs

It will be like “College GameDay” or “Big Noon Kickoff,” only the game will be on Sunday and it will be the NFL.

The CBS show “The NFL Today” is going on the road to Denver for Sunday’s big game between the Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs at Empower Field at Mile High. A set will be erected outside the stadium at the south end and fans are welcome to gather around it to show their enthusiasm.

It’s the fourth time this season “The NFL Today” has taken its show on the road. The pregame show will air live from Denver from 10-11 a.m. in advance of the Broncos’ game getting underway at 2:25 p.m. It will be back to the set in Denver at halftime of NFL games and for a postgame show.

“The crowd is great,’’ said Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher, an analyst on the show. “It’s our pregame show on the road and it’s kind of like the ‘GameDay’ (show on Saturday) in college. We really like the interaction with the fans. It’s been great. It’s been fun. We’re looking forward to it. It’s always fun to go to Denver. It’s a great sports town.”

James Brown is the host of “The NFL Today” and will be joined by analysts Matt Ryan, a former NFL star quarterback, and Nate Burleson, a former receiver, in addition to Cowher, who coached the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1992-2004, winning a Super Bowl in his penultimate season.

Working the game will be CBS’ No. 1 team of legendary play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz, analyst Tony Romo and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson. Nantz figures he or Romo will have a pregame cameo on “The NFL Today,” and he is thrilled to see the show come to Denver.

“It creates a lot of energy, like a game-day experience for the NFL,’’ Nantz said. “It’s been really a wonderful look for the network and I think it’s been forward thinking on our management’s part to bring this energy out of our studio in New York to some really raucous legendary pregame scenes, tailgating scenes around the NFL, the best of the best.”

“The NFL Today,” launched in its modern form on CBS in 1975 with the iconic Brent Musburger as host. it began to go on the road during the regular season last year for multiple Sunday games. The show went to Kansas City-at-Buffalo and Buffalo-at-Detroit games.

This season, “The NFL Today” so far has gone to Detroit at Green Bay in Week 1, Baltimore at Kansas City in Week 4 and Kansas City at Buffalo in Week 9.

Now the show will head to Denver for one of the Broncos’ biggest regular-season games in the past decade. The Broncos (8-2) are trying to distance themselves even more in the AFC West race from the Chiefs (5-4), the nine-time defending division champions.

“It’s a huge game,’’ Cowher said. “It’s a huge game certainly for Kansas City from the standpoint they’ve kind of dug themselves a little bit of a hole. This is a really classic matchup with two teams with a lot on the line. It’s pretty much a statement game for Kansas City and a statement game for Denver.”

Nantz agrees.

“This game has huge consequences,’’ he said. “It’s a chance for Denver to really separate themselves from Kansas City and from a Chiefs perspective, if they have hopes of winning the division. But that’s not normally what they’re only out to do. We know they’re out to be the No. 1 seed and have Arrowhead (Stadium) as the centerpiece of the playoffs. But for that to happen, they can’t drop to 5-5 and really entertain any thoughts of being the No. 1 seed. … It’s like a playoff game (for the Chiefs).”

With the game being shown to the great majority of the nation, Nantz calls it an ideal opportunity for more fans to know about Denver’s rugged defense. The Broncos rank No. 3 in the NFL in scoring and total defense and with 46 sacks are on pace to break Chicago’s 1984 record of 72 in a season. Outside linebackers Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper lead the way with 9.5 and 7.5 sacks, respectively.

“With all these quarterback sacks, the numbers are absolutely staggering,’’ Nantz said. “But I don’t think for whatever reason, it’s quite hit home yet with the full national audience. I just don’t think they’ve quite grasped how great (the Broncos are) defensively. This is a wrecking crew and they’re going to get their due.”

The Broncos will have a chance to show off their pass rush against Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP. Mahomes is 13-1 as a starter against the Broncos in his eight seasons. His only loss to them was 24-9 at Denver in 2023. He did not play in the Broncos’ 38-0 win in the 2024 season finale due to the Chiefs resting starters after locking up the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed.

“They’ve got the two bookends in Bonitto and Cooper and (defensive lineman) Zach Allen inside,’’ Cowher said. “I think (Allen) goes sometimes under the radar but he’s a very dominant interior lineman. … It puts a premium on protection (for the Chiefs) and (Mahomes) is going to have to get the ball out very quick.”

As for the Broncos on offense, they have been inconsistent this season. Denver is ranked No. 17 in league scoring and No. 13 in total offense.

Quarterback Bo Nix has thrown for 2,126 yards and 18 touchdowns. But he is tied for third in the NFL with eight interceptions.

“Bo has not been as accurate as you want him to be, but I think (Broncos coach) Sean (Payton) will try to get him in a rhythm early in the game where he’s getting a feel for what (Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) is trying to do,’’ Cowher said.

Nantz, though, sure liked what he saw in the two previous Broncos games he and Romo did this season on CBS. They looked on Oct. 5 as Nix led Denver back from a 17-3 fourth-quarter deficit to a 21-17 win at defending champion Philadelphia. And they did the game at Denver on Oct. 26 when the Broncos crushed Dallas 44-24 and Nix threw for four touchdowns.

“He’s a second-year quarterback and he’s still growing, but I think Bo Nix is really good,’’ Nantz said. “I think he’s going to be a star in this league for a long, long time. I have no bones to pick. I’m aware of the slow starts (by Denver’s offense) and the early three-and-outs, but I think this is going to work itself out.”

The Broncos have struggled in recent weeks to defeat lightweight foes the New York Jets 13-11, the New York Giants 33-32 and Las Vegas 10-7 last Thursday. But Cowher and Nantz both shrugged that off.

“They’re very comfortable in close games and I think that speaks volumes about what a well-coached team they are and the confidence they have,’’ Cowher said.

“The proof is in the pudding,’’ Nantz said. “They’re 8-2 and having a great season. … They’re building something that could be very special.”

But the Broncos on Sunday will run into the Chiefs, who have won three of the past six Super Bowls and been to five of the last six. They feature future Hall of Famers in Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, defensive tackle Chris Jones and head coach Andy Reid.

While the Broncos haven’t played since Thursday, the Chiefs are coming off a bye. While Reid was with Philadelphia from 1999-2012, the Eagles went 13-1 after having a bye and in his past 12 seasons with Kansas City, the Chiefs are 9-3 after a bye. That’s an overall mark of 22-4.

“He’s got a great record, and nobody knows that better than Sean Payton, who I know consulted Andy several years ago about how he does it, how he structures team practices, team time away from the facility during the bye weeks,’’ Nantz siad. “If you want to put Andy in any scenario, he’s going to have great numbers and great winning percentages. He’s just a great coach and so is Sean Payton. I’m so fired up about this game. … What a monster game this is going to be. There’s so much riding on it.”

No wonder CBS will have its heavy hitters in Denver this weekend with its top announcing crew and “The NFL Today” broadcasting live from Empower Field.
