Why QB Bo Nix deletes social media during NFL season | Broncos notebook

ENGLEWOOD — Good luck finding Bo Nix on Facebook, Instagram or X during the NFL season.

The Broncos quarterback on Wednesday explained part of his method to block out external criticism playing a high-pressure position.

“For me, it’s quite simple. I delete all my social media,” Nix said after practice at Broncos Park. “I don’t have it, so unless someone says it to my face, I don’t really hear it. And nobody’s ever bold enough to say it to my face (laughs). Really, I don’t get on social media.”

That’s probably a good thing as the Broncos (8-2) prepare for the Chiefs (5-4) on Sunday at Empower Field. Nix has led the team to seven consecutive wins but with uneven quarterback play against the Texans and Raiders. In those games, Nix completed 52% of his passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

He embraces the pressure to respond Sunday.

“I’m proud to be in this situation,” Nix said. “I know it’s not easy, but a lot of things in life worth having aren’t easy. … My dad (Alabama high school football coach Patrick Nix) has won state championships. He comes off the field and people are like: ‘Hey, coach, do you think we can run the ball more next year?’ Like, we just won the state championship. There’s always going to be negativity.”

Nix also joined teammates in support of inside linebacker Alex Singleton after surgery to address a testicular cancer diagnosis. Singleton will not play against the Chiefs.

“He’s already a really tough guy, a really brave guy. He’s been through a lot of things in his own personal life, so he’ll continue to battle and we’re praying for him,” Nix said regarding Singleton. “I don’t know what the future is going to look like. Could be great, could be another challenge, but God’s got him right where he needs to be. I think for Alex that can be comforting.”

Defending Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes requires no introduction to Broncos Country.

The Chiefs quarterback has is 13-1 in career games played against Denver with 20 passing touchdowns. Last season, in Week 18, Mahomes sat out when the Broncos defeated Kansas City’s backups. Their defense has plenty of respect for Mahomes playing at a high level in his nine seasons.

Mahomes has passed for 2,349 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions over nine games. He also scored four rushing touchdowns. Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto called the biggest challenge in defending Mahomes as “his ability to maneuver in the pocket.”

“He’s played so many years now, he knows where the pressures are coming (from), how to manipulate the pressures, and be able to step up or step out of pressures and be able to still make plays throwing down the field,” Bonitto said. “He’s a tough challenge for sure … being able to sack him. But I think we’ll have the guys and the plan to be ready for him.”

New turf

The Walton-Penner ownership group replaced the Kentucky bluegrass at Empower Field with fresh turf over the weekend. The scheduled in-season resod is related to player safety and aesthetics as winter months approach. The Broncos use LED grow lights to help keep their grass green all season long.

Denver also replaced its grass in August after the summer concert series.

“I think our (playing) surface is one of the best in the NFL,” right tackle Mike McGlinchey said Wednesday. “I think it says a lot about our ownership to do something that may not be necessary at the time, but in the long haul, it’s going to keep people safe. It’s going to allow the traction to be better. Newer grass is always great grass … especially as the weather starts to turn.”

Briefly

The Broncos will play one game over 23 days hosting the Chiefs on Sunday before their bye week. Coach Sean Payton said: “You can’t control that.” … The Broncos lead the NFL in red-zone defense with nine touchdowns allowed on 24 attempts (37.5%). Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers: “A field goal means the world to us. If we can make them kick field goals every time, I think we’ll like the result.” … Wide receiver Courtland Sutton is impressed with the pass-catching ability of rookie running back RJ Harvey. Sutton said: “He’s not just a running back. He’s a very special dude.” … Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco (knee) did not practice Wednesday.
