Broncos star guard Quinn Meinerz has been bogged down this season by an illness that hasn’t been diagnosed
ENGLEWOOD — Quinn Meinerz is ranked as the No. 3 guard in the NFL by Pro Football Focus and could end up with a second straight All-Pro nod. But the Broncos stalwart said he hasn’t felt fully well all season.
Meinerz missed much of the second half of a 10-7 win over Las Vegas on Thursday, Nov. 6, with what was announced as an illness. He was asked about it following Thursday’s practice at Broncos Park.
“Just a little bit of an illness,’’ Meinerz told The Denver Gazette. “It’s something I’ve been battling here and there throughout the entire season. Still don’t necessarily have answers but working through it every single day, and we’ll see what happens.”
Meinerz said the illness has not been diagnosed, and he has been hoping to get some answers.
“Nothing yet,’’ he said. “I’m still working through it. So I got some more testing and stuff.”
Meinerz said that he has felt different during the season due to the illness.
“It’s random,’’ he said. “Some days I feel great, some days I don’t.”
Meinerz missed the bulk of the second half against the Raiders before returning for the final 4:26 of the game. He ended up playing 38 of Denver’s 61 offensive snaps.
Meinerz has not been on the injury report this week and is expected to start Sunday against Kansas City at Empower Field at Mile High. He said, “there’s a lot on this game” as the Broncos (8-2) seek to create some more distance over the Chiefs (5-4) in the AFC West.
Meinerz was wearing glasses in the locker room Thursday, which he said was something new.
“Got my eyes checked and realized I probably should have to get some glasses going,’’ he said. “So I got some glasses and contacts.”
Meinerz said he’s still “working through” wearing soft contact lenses and it’s the “weirdest feeling.”
Despite any issues, Meinerz has been a stalwart on the offensive line this season for the Broncos. According to Pro Football Focus, the only NFL guards ranked ahead of him are Quenton Nelson of Indianapolis and Kevin Dotson of the Los Angeles Rams.
