Avs, Nuggets take center stage with Broncos going on bye | The Starting Lineup

Three must-see events this week:

  1. Nuggets vs. Chicago Bulls (7 p.m. Monday, Altitude) – The real story of the Nuggets’ season? Thanks to a deeper bench, best-player-in-basketball Nikola Jokic is playing fewer minutes.
  2. Avalanche vs. New York Rangers (7 p.m. Thursday, Ch. 9) – The Avalanche, who have the most points in the NHL, welcome their second team from New York to Denver in a five-day span.
  3. Colorado vs. Arizona State (Time TBD, Saturday) – The Buffs’ home finale doesn’t have a kickoff time yet, but the Folsom Field crowd will get a look at the future in quarterback Julian Lewis.

Numbers game

$81 million – the amount remaining on the final three years of Kris Bryant’s contract with the Rockies. Bryant’s status is high on the to-do list of new boss Paul DePodesta.

Box office

Nov. 16, 1998 – The undefeated Broncos rolled 30-7 in Kansas City with Bubby Brister subbing for an injured John Elway. Terrell Davis rushed for 111 yards as part of an MVP season.

Final word

Colorado sports fans have watched the Broncos, Nuggets and Avs endure rough times, but they went through rebuilds that put them back on the map. It is time for the Rockies to embrace that notion with DePodesta at the helm.
