Broncos’ special teams come up big vs. Chiefs after recent struggles
There has been plenty of noise around the Broncos heading into Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
And plenty of that noise has been about the special teams group, which in recent weeks have struggled on kick/punt coverage, had kicks blocked, and have incurred untimely penalties.
Denver’s special teams quieted a lot of that noise during a 22-19 win at Empower Field at Mile High.
Kicker Wil Lutz went 5-for-5 on field goals, including the game-winner; Marvin Mims returned from injury with a 70-yard punt return that set up a score, and punter Jeremy Crawshaw flipped the field several times after struggling against the Raiders
There was also offensive tackle Frank Crum blocking an extra point in the fourth quarter.
“Special teams came up,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said after the game. “Frank Crum gets a PAT block. I felt like we played on their end of the field.”
Last season in Kansas City, the Broncos had a chance to upset the Chiefs, but Lutz’s 35-yard field goal was blocked at the buzzer. On Sunday, the field goal to win and take control of the AFC West measured the exact same yardage.
This time it went through the uprights as time expired.
“When you’re part of a loss like that, you don’t just forget about it,” Lutz said. “When I looked down and saw that we were on the line again, making a 35-yard field goal, I was kind of like, shoot, here we are.
“I’ve been waiting for a game like that. We haven’t kicked a ton of field goals this year, which is not always a bad thing. It’s hard to get in a rhythm because we kick one or two field goals a game. I’ve been waiting for a game like that. It was nice to play a big part in it.”
The veteran kicker has come up clutch several times this season as the Broncos moved to 9-2 and hold a two-game lead in the division. Sunday was his third winning kick as time expired. He booted game-winners against the Giants and Texans as well.
“He had a great night. I saw it in New Orleans, that’s why he’s here,” Payton said about his kicker.
Mims’ return was an immediate boost for the Broncos’ special teams. The All-Pro returner had missed the last two games because of a concussion. The first time Mims got his hands on the ball, he took it 70 yards to set up a field goal in the first quarter and a 6-0 lead.
“We created short fields for our offense, and that’s huge. Marv’s a two-time All-Pro. We’re happy to have him back,” Lutz said.
An unlikely moment of the victory was the extra point block by Crum. The Chiefs had scored a touchdown with a chance to go up 20-16, forcing the Broncos to score a touchdown to win the game. Crum’s block kept the game at 19-16 Chiefs and allowed the Broncos to kick two field goals for the win.
