Larimer County deputy injured in shooting during traffic pursuit

A police pursuit starting in Berthoud on Sunday morning ended with a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputy and the suspect injured.

At around 2:32 a.m., A Larimer County deputy engaged in a traffic stop near Grand Market Avenue and TPC Parkway. During the stop, the driver didn’t comply and drove away at high speeds, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

During the pursuit, the deputy performed a precision immobilization technique, or PIT maneuver, to stop the vehicle on Highway 60 east of Interstate 25, near Johnstown. There, authorities said the suspect accelerated towards the deputy, who fired his weapon.

Due to the PIT maneuver and the suspect’s actions, the deputy sustained minor injuries and was later released from the hospital. The suspect was later released into custody after being treated for injuries at a hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

A separate passenger in the suspect’s vehicle didn’t sustain injuries, authorities said.

The Eighth Judicial Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting further. Fort Collins Police Services will release any further charges.
