Top 10 games in history of Broncos-Chiefs rivalry
Get ready for another thrilling chapter of Broncos-Chiefs history.
Denver (8-2) hosts Kansas City (5-4) on Sunday at Empower Field in the 130th all-time meeting between pro football franchises. The rivalry is lopsided in the modern era toward the Chiefs, with a 16-2 record over Denver since 2016. A Broncos win on Sunday puts them another step closer to ending Kansas City’s nine-year run of winning the AFC West.
Here is a look back at the top 10 games in recent memory between the Broncos and Chiefs — listed by excitement, unpredictability and stakes of the result.
10. Chiefs 27, Broncos 24 — Dec. 31, 2017
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes made his NFL debut in KC’s regular-season finale playing on the road in Denver. He completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards, one interception and no touchdowns. A humble start to a likely Pro Football Hall of Fame career. Mahomes all time is 13-1 playing against the Broncos. It’s fitting that he outplayed Denver quarterback Paxton Lynch in his first NFL start. Mahomes has haunted the Broncos for almost a decade.
9. Chiefs 28, Broncos 24 — Jan. 8, 2022
How bad did it get for the Broncos? Denver led 21-20 midway through the fourth quarter with possession inside the Kansas City 10-yard line. That’s when running back Melvin Gordon lost a fumble recovered for an 86-yard touchdown return by Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton. The Broncos fired head coach Vic Fangio the next day after a 19-30 record posted over three seasons. The Chiefs were AFC West royalty. The Broncos were a mess.

8. Broncos 31, Chiefs 24 — Sept. 17, 2015
It’s not all terrible memories against Kansas City. Case in point: Week 2 of Denver’s run to win Super Bowl 50. The Broncos and Chiefs were tied, 24-24, with under a minute left in regulation. That’s when cornerback Bradley Roby recovered a fumble by running back Jamaal Charles and returned it 21 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The Broncos won their 13th consecutive division road game for the longest such streak in NFL history.
7. Chiefs 30, Broncos 27 (OT) — Nov. 27, 2016
The Broncos often pick the most heartbreaking way to lose against Kansas City. Like when Denver went into overtime in Week 12 playing the Chiefs. Cairo Santos lined up for a 34-yard field goal to win it for KC in overtime. Good news: His attempt hit the left field goal post. Bad news: The football somehow went through the uprights. Denver failed to make the postseason one year after winning the Super Bowl.
6. Chiefs 24, Broncos 23 — Oct. 5, 2003
The Broncos led 23-17 midway through the fourth quarter when a special teams play changed everything. Denver was forced to punt and return man Dante Hall fielded the boot from Micah Knorr at his own 7-yard line. The Broncos proved unable to contain Hall on an impressive 93-yard punt return touchdown. It was the first loss of the season for a Denver team that reached the playoffs and lost to the Colts in an AFC Wild Card game.
5. Chiefs 16, Broncos 14 — Nov. 10, 2024
It sure looked like Bo Nix would defeat the Chiefs in his first attempt as Denver’s starting quarterback. The Broncos marched into KC territory to attempt a 35-yard field goal with one second left in the fourth quarter. But the relative chip shot for kicker Wil Lutz was blocked by Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal. The emotions flipped on Denver’s sideline from pure elation to pure sadness in a matter of seconds.
4. Broncos 24, Chiefs 9 — Oct. 29, 2023
The Broncos lost 16 consecutive games to the Chiefs. That all changed when Sean Payton took over in Denver and beat Kansas City in his second attempt as head coach. Quarterback Russell Wilson completed three touchdown passes with no interceptions. The Broncos’ defense gave up three field goals and zero touchdowns. It was the sort of victory that gave hope for the future despite the need for roster upgrades.

3. Broncos 38, Chiefs 0 — Jan. 5, 2025
It’s difficult to find the proper spot for this game. The Chiefs played backups to preserve health for the postseason. The Broncos faced little resistance and led 24-0 at halftime. But that created a second-half celebration — coasting to victory to earn their first playoff berth since 2015. The lasting image from that night is Nix running around the field postgame, giving high-fives to the first row of fans at Empower Field.
2. Chiefs 31, Broncos 28 — Oct. 17, 1994
Imagine this: John Elway vs. Joe Montana on Monday Night Football. Two of the NFL’s greatest all-time quarterbacks met in an instant classic. The Broncos led 28-24 in the fourth quarter after a short Elway rushing touchdown. But Montana, in his final NFL season, orchestrated a masterpiece drive for a comeback win. He completed seven of eight passes on that final series — including a touchdown strike to wide receiver Willie Davis — to beat Elway.
1. Broncos 14, Chiefs 10 — Jan. 4, 1998
Denver’s only playoff meeting against Kansas City was on the path to winning Super Bowl XXXII. The Chiefs hosted the Broncos for a divisional round matchup. Kansas City led 10-7 after three quarters, but running back Terrell Davis gave Denver the lead scoring a 1-yard rushing touchdown. The Broncos’ defense made a fourth-down stop to seal a postseason win over their division rivals.
