Knifepoint carjacking reported at remote trailhead in Colorado
A terrifying situation unfolded at a Boulder County trailhead earlier this week, involving someone reportedly getting carjacked at knife point amid a string of alleged crimes.
According to a report from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the situation started with a November 16 domestic violence situation that originated in Denver, leading to a 24-year-old male suspect allegedly driving a female victim to the Caribou Trailhead, which is located in remote terrain along Caribou Road northwest of Nederland.
Once at the trailhead, the female victim was able to escape the vehicle when the suspect briefly stepped away, turning to community members in the parking lot for help.
The community members had a child inside of their vehicle at the time and were concerned about their safety given the situation at hand, ultimately telling the victim to follow them to their vehicle so that they could all leave the area together.
As the community members were driving the victim away from the scene, the suspect returned and attempted to confront them. They were able to get around the suspect and leave the trailhead behind.
Not much later, the suspect reportedly carjacked a Toyota 4Runner from someone at knifepoint in the Caribou Trailhead parking lot, fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle. This was reported at about 4:30 p.m.
Deputies out of adjacent Gilpin County were able to locate the stolen vehicle on State Highway 119, initiating a pursuit. The vehicular chase continued to the northern edge of Black Hawk and when deputies were able to pin the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect allegedly fled on foot.
The suspect’s alleged escape prompted an extensive search effort involving drones and K-9 units, though this effort was unsuccessful and the suspect remained on the run overnight.
On the morning of November 17, another carjacking reportedly occurred involving a suspect that matched the description of the one law enforcement was looking for. This carjacking occurred in the parking lot of Black Hawk’s Lady Luck Casino, also involving a knife and taking place after a reported physical altercation. The victim in that carjacking was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Now believed to be in a new vehicle, the suspect remained on the run for a good portion of the day until investigators tracked the suspect to Federal Heights at about 2 p.m. The suspect was taken into custody without further issue.
The suspect was booked into Boulder County Jail on several felony and misdemeanor charges related to the situation, described by the sheriff’s office below:
“18-3-302(1) – Kidnapping – A Class 2 Felony; 18-3-402(1)(a),(5) – Sexual Assault – A Class 2 Felony; 18-3-202(1)(a) – Assault in the First Degree, Deadly Weapon – A Class 3 Felony; 18-4-409(2) – Motor Vehicle Theft in the First Degree – A Class 3 Felony; 18-3-202(1)(g) – Assault in the Second Degree, Strangulation – A Class 4 felony; 18-9-116.5 – Vehicular Eluding – A Class 5 Felony; 18-4-409(4)(a) – Attempted Motor Vehicle Theft in the Third Degree – A Class 6 Felony; and two counts of 18-9-202 – Animal Cruelty – A Class 1 Misdemeanor.“
Law enforcement agencies involved in the situation included the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Black Hawk Police Department, the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. All charges are merely accusations.
