Grizzly attacks school group in Canada, injuring 11 people

The hunt is on for a British Columbia grizzly bear that reportedly attacked a school group on the afternoon of November 20, resulting in 11 injuries.

The attack occurred on a walking trail in the town of Bella Coola, with four people remaining hospitalized at last report, two of whom were critically injured and two who were seriously injured.

According to a report from BBC, a parent of one of the children that was part of the group said a male teacher “got the whole brunt of it.”

When the attack occurred, adults with the group attempted to fend off the animal using bear spray.

The group involved with the attack were associated with Acwsalcta School, which is operated by Nuxalk Nation. Nuxalk Nation has made numerous Facebook posts following the tragic event relaying information to the public, including that any bear in the area should not be approached, as well as that armed officers are in the area looking for the bear. On the day of the attack, those in the area were asked to remain indoors and off of the highway. At last report, the bear has not been found.

Bella Coola is located roughly 250 miles northwest of Vancouver.
