Yu nets OT winner as Air Force flies past rival Army for weekend sweep

Air Force hockey left wing Anthony Yu went back for seconds.

Yu redirected a shot from Falcons’ top-line center Nick Sajevic for the game-winning goal at 2:43 of overtime to lift Air Force to a 3-2 win and a series sweep over rival Army in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday.

Yu scored his first goal of the season against the Black Knights on Friday and doubled his total on Saturday to help the Falcons claim five of six available points toward Atlantic Hockey America standings.

Sajevic earned his fourth assist of the weekend on Yu’s goal in what was a productive series for Air Force’s top line. The sophomore trio of Sajevic, left wing Will Dawson and right wing Sam Stitz combined for three goals and seven points on the weekend.

Stitz scored on both evenings. His second goal broke a 1-1 tie between the Falcons (7-6-1, 4-4) and Black Knights (3-7-3, 1-7-2) on Saturday. His power-play goal at 18:04 of the second period was his fifth score of the season, tying him with senior defenseman and captain Chris Hedden for most on the team.

Saturday’s contest nearly went a full period without a goal as the score prior to Stitz’s came from Black Knights senior defenseman Sean Vlasich, who beat Air Force junior goaltender Dominik Wasik at 19:16 of the first period.

On Friday, five Air Force forwards scored goals, including the first of the season for Yu and junior Nick Remissong. Falcons freshman Aidan Willis kept the trend going and earned the first goal of the night and his first career score on Saturday at the 7:14 mark of the opening period.

The hosts trailed 2-1 entering the third period but found new life thanks to a power-play goal from forward Ben Ivey at 5:33.

Wasik finished with 31 saves on the evening as Army outshot Air Force 33-24.

The Falcons earned their third sweep in four weeks with Saturday’s win. Next week, Air Force continues conference play but will remain in the Empire State with a trip to Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y.
