2 Colorado ski towns rank among USA Today’s best
Today, ski towns include everything from great restaurants, bars, and shops to excellent accommodations and often a historic atmosphere – and as anyone who has spent much time in Colorado knows, there’s no shortage of mountain enclaves worth checking out in the Centennial State.
USA Today recently released their list of the ten best ski towns across the U.S. and two Colorado towns made the cut to be included in the rankings.
USA Today’s 10Best is a readers’ choice awards program that features the best in the country’s destinations, food and drink, hotels, and things to do. The nominees for each category are selected by an expert panel. Readers vote for their favorites to determine the ten winners.
Breckenridge ended up ranking as the fifth best ski town nationwide. According to USA Today, the town’s five peaks run parallel to the downtown area. Breckenridge was founded as a mining town in the 1800s, and the town still has historic Victorian commercial buildings. These buildings were once saloons and brothels, but they’ve since been converted into boutiques, restaurants, ski shops, and bars.
Aspen took seventh place on the list. According to USA Today, Aspen Mountain was developed as a ski area in the 1940s. The slopes of Aspen Snowmass reach over four mountain peaks. The downtown area is home to plenty of fur boutiques, high-end jewelry stores, ski shops, and much more. USA Today also notes that the Aspen Music Festival has helped establish the mountain town as a center for the arts.
North Conway, New Hampshire took first place as the best ski town according to USA Today.
