Scott Wedgewood ready if Team Canada calls Avalanche goalie for the Olympics: ‘I feel like I can help’
Scott Wedgewood has not heard from Team Canada about the Olympics, but he has heard about the growing “Wedgewood for Canada” movement online.
He’s ready to step in if he gets the call.
“I think (TNT analyst Paul) Bissonnette posted something about it and my buddies were sending that. It’s starting to get some recognition,” Wedgewood said after practice Thursday. “It’s super cool. Just to be on the table and a name on the list would be something awesome and obviously (to) play for (them), I feel like I can help. I can do what I do for this team for anybody.”
It’s a fascinating storyline to watch since Wedgewood was not on anyone’s radar for Team Canada at the start of this season. Even he admits that.
“The truth of it is, you ask anybody in the summer, they’d laugh at you, right?” the goaltender said.
His play has warranted a real discussion. Wedgewood’s .918 save percentage is the best among all Canadian-born goaltenders who have played more than six games. The same can be said for his 2.09 goals-against average.
Those numbers — combined with the fact he’s leading the NHL in wins — should put him in the discussion, even if it’s for the third goaltender position. As poorly as Jordan Binnington has played, odds are that Binnington will be on the roster and likely will start. Logan Thompson, who sits behind Wedgewood in most categories, is another goaltender who will probably get the call.
While Wedgewood isn’t letting the talk affect his day-to-day work, he doesn’t hide the fact that he’d love to get the call.
“Hoping for it,” he said. “I don’t know how it all works and the situation at all, but it’s cool. It’s really cool just to be in the conversation. … Just thinking about being a Canadian kid, growing up, it was everyone’s dream, but just to be in to be in the consideration and get my name out there right now has been really cool.”
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said it would be “smart” of Team Canada to have Wedgewood in the conversation for a spot, although they aren’t making any roster decisions until late December. The hard work of the goaltender to continue to improve has put him in that conversation.
“I think the things that have really built my game are very high-end,” Wedgewood said. “The ability that I have for awareness, to check it off, the situational positioning, all that stuff I do at a high level. I just haven’t had the opportunity to really consistently put that on display and I have been (able to) this year. Call it great timing, but I think getting more and more eyes on me more often is proving dividends. It’s just what I’ve built over the years in my game plan. I’ve always been confident in myself, it’s just now everything’s kind of showing itself at the right time.”
Practice notes
- Joel Kiviranta was declared “good to go” by Bednar and will be in the lineup Wednesday against the San Jose Sharks.
- Valeri Nichushkin made it through almost all of Tuesday’s practice in a noncontact jersey, so he’s getting closer to a return. It doesn’t sound like his return will be this weekend.
- Gavin Brindley and Logan O’Connor are still a ways away from returning.
