Avalanche blow out San Jose Sharks 6-0, record third straight shutout
The San Jose Sharks are a team on the rise, but Wednesday night felt like the Colorado Avalanche telling them, “it’s not your turn just yet.”
Colorado scored five goals in the opening 25 minutes, including three in a span of 1:16 in the second period en route to a blowout 6-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks. This win was about the Avalanche showcasing their depth, as every single line chipped in with a goal.
“Everyone (was) ready to go,” coach Jared Bednar said after the game. “Looked like we got our legs back tonight. Everyone got involved, including our (defense) on the offensive side of it. We had a couple quiet nights offensively on the road and we wanted to bounce back. The things we talked about going into the game, I thought the guys executed really well.”
As impressive as the Avalanche were offensively, they’ve recorded three consecutive shutouts, with two of those coming from Mackenzie Blackwood. The 28-year-old goaltender had said he needed to shake off the rust after some of his earlier starts and he appears to have done that, as the game has slowed down for him significantly.
“Just feels comfortable,” Blackwood said after the win. “You’re not forcing it, you’re not chasing it. Just letting it come to you and being patient. You almost back up and see more of the ice instead of being in tunnel vision. The more you play, the better it feels.”
Even with the game well out of hand, Avalanche players were still laying out to block shots for their goaltender, knowing that another shutout was on the line. Commitment in the defensive zone has been a staple for the team this season, as it has allowed an NHL-low 48 goals against, none of which have come in the last 189:42 of play.
Their goaltender appreciated the efforts of his teammates.
“I freaking love that (expletive),” Blackwood said. “These guys care so much and they take pride in it, no matter what the score is. That makes me so freaking happy that those guys are like that. It makes me want to go to war for them.”
As for the Sharks, they might have been one of the hottest teams in the league, but they just happened to run into the hottest. The victory marked 10 straight wins for Colorado. The Avalanche are setting the bar around the league and teams that come into Ball Arena are learning real quickly that it’s going to take a lot to beat them at this point.
The Sharks found that out real quick.
“We were waxed,” Macklin Celebrini said.
That’s one way of putting it.
Avalanche 6 Sharks 0
What happened: It was men against boys, as the veteran Avalanche took it to the young Sharks.
What went right: Colorado’s first power play was horrific, but their second one was their best in weeks. Granted, the bar is pretty low given how poor the man advantage has looked, but Martin Necas was whipping the puck from one side to the other and it ended with a Nathan MacKinnon goal off a one-timer.
What went wrong: As most teams typically do, the Avalanche took their foot off the gas after scoring their fifth goal. The bigger issue is they got undisciplined and started taking penalties. Bednar is probably searching for things to coach at this point, so that will at least keep him busy.
Avalanche goal scorers: Colton (5), MacKinnon (18), Malinski (2), Manson (2), Kiviranta (1), Lehkonen (9)
Between the pipes: Mackenzie Blackwood stopped all 26 shots for his second shutout.
What’s next: Colorado will head to Minnesota to take on the Wild for the first time this season on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
