Rocky Mountain to charge foreign visitors higher entrance fees starting Jan. 1

Foreign visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park will have to pay $100 more in entrance fees than United States residents starting Jan. 1, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced.

The federal agency made the announcement about fee changes in national parks on Tuesday, saying nonresidents without an annual parks pass will pay $100 per person in addition to the standard entrance fee to enter 11 of the country’s most-visited parks, including Rocky Mountain.

Other parks with the $100 non-resident surcharge include Acadia, Bryce Canyon, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, Yellowstone, Zion and Yosemite National Parks.

Residence-based pricing will also apply to annual park passes, with annual passes costing $80 for U.S. residents and $250 for nonresidents, according to the DOI statement.

“U.S. residents will continue to enjoy affordable pricing, while nonresidents will pay a higher rate to help support the care and maintenance of America’s parks,” the agency said.

Rocky Mountain National Park saw more than four million visitors in 2024. The park’s spokesperson did not reply to an inquiry from The Denver Gazette into what percentage of those visitors are U.S. residents.

Additionally, the department highlighted eight resident-only fee-free days for 2026, including Presidents Day on Feb. 16, Memorial Day on May 25, Flag Day on June 14, Independence Day weekend from July 3 to July 5, 110th birthday of the National Park Service on Aug. 25, Constitution Day on Sept. 17, Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday on Oct. 27 and Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11.

The pricing changes also come with changes to park passes themselves, adding a new digital pass option, the agency said.

Under the new system, the America the Beautiful passes will be available in digital format through Recreation.gov. Visitors can store the passes on their phones, allowing “faster entry and a smoother visitor experience across the National Park System,” the agency said.

Motorcyclists with the America the Beautiful pass will be allowed entry for two motorcycles per pass under the new system, as well, according to the statement.
