What I’ll be watching
The Gazette’s Brent Briggeman identifies items of intrigue he’ll be tracking during the game.
The quarterback position
Neither team has announced a starter, so the styles of the game could vary based on who plays. For Air Force, the decision is likely between Josh Johnson and Kemper Hodges. Might Maguire Martin sneak in as a surprise pick? Why not give one more player some experience going into the offseason? For Colorado State, the decision likely depends on the status of Jackson Brousseau (listed as questionable on the availability report). If not him, Tahj Bullock would be the likely default option.
Air Force’s secondary
Sophomore cornerback Mikhail Seiken is out with an injury, according to the availability report released on Wednesday. The Falcons did not start the same five-person secondary in consecutive games until they stuck with the same combination over the past three weeks. Now that deck gets reshuffled vs. a capable Rams passing offense that ranks seventh in the Mountain West at 206.2 yards per game.
Air Force’s running game
This will be the ninth time a Troy Calhoun-coached Air Force team has played a Colorado State squad with a losing record on Oct. 28th or later. In those situations thus far the Falcons are 7-0 with an average margin of victory of 15.7 and have averaged 320.4 rushing yards per game. Several conclusions could be drawn, but this one seems obvious: When CSU has little to play for, it has struggled to find the gear necessary to contend with Air Force’s running game. Will this year be different?
