Evan Engram enjoys breakout performance in win over Commanders | Broncos notebook
The Denver Broncos do not beat the Washington Commanders on Sunday without the heroics of tight end Evan Engram.
The Broncos faced first-and-10 at the Denver 48-yard line, on the third play of overtime, when quarterback Bo Nix received a shotgun snap with Engram to his right in the slot.
Engram drew linebacker Bobby Wagner in coverage. The veteran tight end shook him with a jerk route — faking a dig and breaking right — for an easy Nix completion. That’s when 31-year-old Engram turned back the clock and ran almost untouched for a 41-yard gain.
The Broncos scored two plays later in a 27-26 overtime victory.
“It feels great just to make a big play like that for the team,” Engram told reporters at Northwest Stadium.
Engram led the Broncos in targets (nine), catches (six) and receiving yards (79) against Washington. It was a breakout performance after the free agent signing often struggled to produce in coach Sean Payton’s offense. Engram has one touchdown catch in 11 games played.
But the ninth-year pro took advantage of increased opportunities against Washington. Especially on his long catch-and-run in overtime.
“That puts us in position to score and gets us to some of the other plays that we really, really like as an offense in our game planning,” tight end Adam Trautman said. “I think it’s just a glimpse of what it could be.”

Raiders dysfunction
Pete Carroll is off to a rough start as coach of the Raiders.
Las Vegas (2-10) has lost six consecutive games, entering Week 14 against the Broncos (10-2). The Raiders made in-season firings of special teams coordinator Tom McMahon and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. The list goes on. Las Vegas fell 31-14 against the Chargers last week.
“There were positives in there that we’ll try to build on,” Carroll told reporters on Sunday. “That’s all we can do at this time.”
