Castle Rock man sentenced to 30 years in prison for hitting elderly man on head with board

A Castle Rock man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for hitting an 80-year-old on the head with a wooden two-by-four board during a 2024 argument.

Daniel Fougner, 65, was found guilty of felony assault on an at-risk person and felony tampering with physical evidence by a jury in October, according to a Monday news release from the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The victim, 80-year-old Wright Parker, was hospitalized from the attack and is expected to recover from his injuries, which included a brain bleed, according to the release.

The incident took place in 2024 outside Parker’s Elbert County home, where Fougner had been temporarily staying, according to the release. During an argument over money Fougner owed, the man grabbed a two-by-four wooden plank and hit Wright twice on the head.

After the assault, Fougner used a garden hose to wash Wright’s blood off the driveway before running away, according to the release. He was later arrested in Castle Rock.

“By targeting an 80-year-old man, attempting to interfere with the police investigation, and getting rid of the weapon, Fougner showed exactly why strong consequences are necessary,” 23rd Judicial District Chief Deputy District Attorney Eva Wilson said in the release. “The victim welcomed Fougner into his home. Fougner answered that kindness with harm. The 30-year sentence delivers that accountability.”
