Mapping shows chance of 36 to 48 inches of snow possible in part of Colorado thru Sunday morning

It’s looking like a lot more snow will be hitting parts of Colorado over upcoming days, with the brunt of the powder expected to fall Friday through Sunday. While the Front Range and I-25 corridor should escape without much accumulation during this period, parts of central Colorado and northern Colorado are sure to get bogged down.

According to the ‘expected’ snowfall forecast from the National Weather Service – which has an 80% chance of coming to fruition, parts of the Park Range near Steamboat Springs could get between 30 and 36 inches of snow through Sunday morning while many of the state’s peaks in the central and northern mountain regions will likely get snow between 12 and 18 inches. Rabbit Ears Pass is expected to get at least 14 to 23 inches while parts of I-70 could get between eight and 18 inches of snow during the same period in the most likely scenario. The Eisenhower-Johnson tunnel complex is expected to get about eight to 13 inches.

Keep in mind that all of those aforementioned predictions are related to the most likely scenario. The 10-percent-chance ‘high-end’ snowfall scenario, however, shows that the snowfall has a chance of being heavier and more widespread.

In this ‘high-end’ scenario, the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnel complex gets 16 inches of snow through Sunday morning, with much of the I-70 mountain corridor likely to get snow in the range of eight to 18 inches. Possible totals on peaks of the Park Range near Steamboat Springs soar to between 36 and 48 inches of snow. Steamboat Resort gets hit hard too – about 30 inches of snow are possible over the next five days.

See both scenarios depicted on the forecast maps below:

As a result of the incoming snow, various weather alerts have been activated for the region. Find additional information about this forecast and information about those alerts on the National Weather Service website here.

With this week’s snowfall, the statewide snowpack is now at 53 percent of the norm for December 4. It’s likely this weekend’s snowfall will further narrow that gap.
