Netflix announces ‘Elway’ documentary streaming date

The intensely personal, high-profile Netflix documentary examining the legacy of former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway will be released Dec. 22, the streaming service announced Thursday.

The documentary covers Elway’s career as a college and professional football player, including his baseball draft and two Super Bowl wins with the Broncos, as well as his more challenging role later on as a team executive.

But “Elway,” produced in part by Peyton Manning‘s Omaha Productions, is much more than a mere career retrospective. It covers the devastating succession of his personal losses, including the deaths of his twin sister and father within 18 months, and the crumbling of his fairy-tale marriage.

Netflix on Thursday released the official trailer for the documentary.

The film made its world premiere on the final day of the 10-day Denver Film Festival in November.

“When you watch this film, you are going to learn just how pressure-filled John’s life was — not just as a quarterback and as a player, but as a man,” documentary co-director Ken Rodgers told The Denver Gazette at the festival.

“Elway” runs 1 hour, 38 minutes and is rated TV-14.

Denver Gazette arts columnist John Moore contributed to this report.
