Colorado resort ranks among the ‘most legendary’ on Earth
Forbes’ inaugural Hotel Icons List includes lots of luxurious European lodging, with the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, Ritz Paris, and the Savoy in London. Only five U.S. hotels made the list, with four of those five being in the East Coast. The last U.S. establishment that made the list is located in Colorado.
The Broadmoor is the only Colorado resort that earned the accolade. According to Forbes, The Broadmoor, located in Colorado Springs, was opened in 1918. Rooms only cost $10 to $12 per night and came with three meals. The resort also included a 35-by-8-foot indoor swimming pool which was the largest in the West.
The Broadmoor is also the longest-running Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel. It has earned that top honor for 65 consecutive years.
Today, The Broadmoor has grown to include two golf courses, a fly-fishing camp, and much more.
To be included on the list, an honor that was given to 23 hotels, honorees needed a history of more than 100 years, continuous operation under the same name, and a distinguished Five-Star rating.
