Former Douglas County teacher sentenced for sexual exploitation of a child
A 23rd Judicial District judge on Friday sentenced a former Douglas County School District teacher who was caught with child pornography and non-consensual photos of his students in the classroom.
Chief Judge Ryan Stuart sentenced Christen Cassic, 56, of Parker, to 90 days in jail and 10 years in sexual offender intensive supervised probation, which includes constant monitoring on all his devices, according to a 23rd Judicial District news release.
Since 2022, Cassic taught computer science and coached soccer at Rock Canyon High School. Previously, he served as an assistant soccer coach at Legend High School beginning in 2015.
On Jan. 14, a colleague walked in on Cassic sitting at his desk with his pants down and watching pornography on his laptop, according to 23rd Judicial District officials.
Further investigation revealed Cassic’s USB drive contained “a significant number” of pornographic images that included child sex abuse material. Cassic also took pictures of his students in class without them knowing, authorities said.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Cassic on Jan. 21. He was previously held at the Douglas County Detention Facility on a $150,000 bond.
The former teacher pleaded guilty on sexual exploitation of a child.
Cassic apologized for his actions in court.
“I want to be a different person,” he said.
Cassic’s sentence provided “a measure of closure for students and families harmed by his actions,” 23rd Judicial District Chief Deputy District Attorney Danielle Jaramillo said.
DA George Brauchler further condemned Cassic’s actions, warning other potential child predators they will be caught and sent to prison.
“We will continue to push Colorado’s offender-friendly legislature to put more teeth in the laws meant to protect our kids,” Brauchler said.
