Denver cop arrested after allegedly driving 102 mph and eluding traffic stop
An off-duty Denver police officer was taken into custody for allegedly driving 102 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone and then failing to stop when a Colorado State Patrol trooper attempted a traffic stop.
According to a report from Colorado State Patrol, the situation started to unfold at about 11:27 p.m. on the night of October 24, with an arrest taking place related to the case last Friday. On the night of the incident, a state trooper on Highway 58 near mile marker 4 in Jefferson County observed a white Dodge Ram traveling at a high rate of speed, clocked at 102 miles per hour – 37 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65. The trooper was able to catch up with the truck on eastbound I-70, then estimating its speed at 90 miles per hour in another 65 mph zone.
When the trooper maneuvered to a position behind the truck, the truck reportedly “accelerated aggressively.” There was a brief pursuit, though it was discontinued due to safety concerns as speeds exceeded 100 miles per hour amid moderate Interstate traffic.
Part of the license plate revealed that the truck was registered to a Christopher Thomas, with troopers heading to his registered address and spotting the same truck again, this time turning onto Harlan Street. The driver of the truck is reported to have again accelerated, with troopers opting not to pursue. The investigation into the situation continued.
Colorado State Patrol worked in cooperation with the Denver Police Department to gather evidence and obtain an arrest warrant. On December 5, Denver police officer Christoper Thomas was booked into Jefferson County Jail for possible charges related to the incident, including felony eluding and reckless endangerment.
All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Arrests and charges are merely accusations.
