Lakewood police still investigating burglary turned homicide

The Lakewood Police Department is investigating an alleged burglary that ended in a homicide Saturday evening.

Police responded to 300 S. Kendall St. — in a cul-de-sac next to West Alameda Avenue — Saturday evening after someone reported that a woman was found dead in her home, according to the department.

Officials said they believe the death was connected to a burglary. No other details about the case have been released, including suspect information.

Nearby resident Desirée González saw the sirens and walked down to the home. She told The Denver Gazette that neighbors were visibly shaken.

The home is backed against a storage facility on Alameda. The owner of the property is Elizabeth Johnson, who is in her 80s, according to property records. She purchased the home in 1978.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office pending an austopsy and notification of family.

While the department posted a news release Sunday asking for the community’s help in identifying a suspect or evidence, González said the lack of information is concerning.

“A woman died and nobody saw anything. That silence is not acceptable,” she said. “We deserve answers. We are not going to pretend this is normal. A community is measured by how it responds when a life is lost.”

“We cannot control everything but we can build a community that is harder to harm,” González added. “Safety is visibility, light, relationships and awareness. When yards that back up to major roads are well lit, when neighbors know each other and when we check on people instead of assuming someone else will do it, we reduce the chance of a crime of opportunity.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lakewood Police Department at (303) 763-6800 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867.
