Adams County deputy found dead while on duty Monday, no foul play suspected
An Adams County sheriff’s deputy was found dead while on duty Monday morning in an incident authorities do not believe involved foul play.
Karl Smalley, 67, was found by deputies responding to a missing persons report near Box Elder Creek in Watkins on Monday morning, according to a Tuesday news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. He was not breathing and was later pronounced dead.
Smalley had just started his day and was on-duty at the time of his death, according to the release. Officials confirmed Tuesday that he was the reported missing person and no foul play is suspected at this time.
The deputy was a commander with the office overseeing the Watkins and Strasburg areas of District 5, and had served with the agency for more than 30 years, according to the release. He had led several programs with the office throughout his career, and was involved in search and rescue initiatives as well as a subject matter expert.
Smalley’s family is requesting privacy at this time and more information will be released at a later date.
