Broncos-Packers on Sunday will be ‘like playoff football’ and could be a Super Bowl preview

ENGLEWOOD – It was 28 seasons ago that quarterback John Elway had his famous “Helicopter” play and running back Terrell Davis fought off migraine headaches to be the MVP of Super Bowl XXXII as Denver defeated Green Bay 31-24.

Could the Broncos and the Packers be heading toward a Super Bowl rematch?

The teams meet Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High in a game between AFC and NFC powerhouses. The Broncos are 11-2 and have a 10-game winning streak and the Packers are 9-3-1 and have won four in a row.

Broncos players didn’t want to get caught up Wednesday in talk about whether Sunday’s game could be a preview of Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, Calif. Tackle Mike McGlinchey said there’s “a lot of ball left to be played” and safety Brandon Jones called it “just another game.”

But Jones soon reversed course. While he wasn’t talking Super Bowl, he doesn’t deny it is a measuring stick game for the Broncos.

“It’s going to be a real test,’’ Jones said after a practice at Broncos Park. “I’m super excited. …. Obviously, it’s a bigger game and we kind of put ourselves in this position to make it a big game.”

McGlinchey also is fired up for the game.

“It’s an exciting day, and you always want to play against the best,’’ McGlinchey said. “These guys have proven that they’re at the top of the league for a couple of years now and I think we are on our way, too. It’s going to be a heck of a battle.”

A win would clinch a second straight playoff berth for the Broncos after they made the postseason last year for the first time since since winning Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season. They are tied with New England for the best record in the NFL and would win a possible one-on-one tiebreaker with the Patriots for the No. 1 playoff seed in the AFC.

The Packers are a half game behind the 10-3 Los Angeles Rams in the battle for the top seed in the NFC.

“Love it,’’ Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said of Sunday’s game. “I think the atmosphere is going to be electric. I think our fans are going to be extremely motivated and very hostile. … This will be what seems to be a playoff game, so this will be an intense game on the field. It’ll be an intense environment. … It’s pretty much going to be like playoff football, and that’s what you get in December. At the end of the season, that’s what you’re playing for. We’re extremely excited about it and happy to be in this position this year.”

Despite not having lost since Sept. 21 and having an 11-game home winning streak, the longest current one in the NFL, the Broncos are a 2 1/2-point underdog. But that doesn’t bother Nix at all.

“I don’t really care,’’ Nix said. “My mom thinks we’ll win, so that’s all that matters.”

Packers coach Matt LeFleur spent plenty of time Wednesday in Green Bay praising the Broncos. He said “there’s just not really a weak link out there” on their defense.

“They’ve got players across the board,’’ LeFleur said. “I mean, the sack numbers are pretty crazy (with a league-high 55). Their run defense is pretty crazy. You got a legitimate shutdown corner (in Pat Surtain).”

The teams last met in the regular season in 2023, with the Broncos winning 19-17 at home in Week 7. The Packers returned to Denver in August 2024 for a joint practice followed by the Broncos winning 27-2 in a preseason game in which LeFleur didn’t play his starters.

“They kind of put it on us pretty good,’’ LeFleur said of the joint practice.

Surtain agreed.

“I believe we did,’’ Surtain said. “It was very competitive, but I felt like we brought that energy and that juice.”

Yet the Packers this season added star pass rusher Micah Parsons in a trade from Dallas. He has 12.5 sacks.

And Packers quarterback Jordan Love has continued to get better. In his sixth season, third as the starter, Love has thrown for 3,028 yards with 22 touchdowns and just four interceptions and has a sparkling passer rating of 105.4.

“His deep ball accuracy, his poise in the pocket,’’ Broncos coach Sean Payton said about what is impressive with Love. “He can extend, he can climb, he can run. He doesn’t take sacks. I feel like over the last however many years, I’ve watched him just progress. So there’s a timing and a confidence level.”

The Broncos, though, have had success against star Green Bay quarterbacks. During their Super Bowl 50 winning season, the Packers came to Denver for a game in which both teams were 6-0. The Broncos shut down Aaron Rodgers, and he completed a meager 14 of 22 passes for 77 yards in Green Bay’s 29-10 loss.

And then there was Super Bowl XXXII, when the Packers, with Brett Favre, were an 11-point favorite in January 1998. Favre was decent, completing 25 of 42 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns but he also threw an interception and couldn’t lead his team to tie the score on a late drive.

Denver’s first Super Bowl win is remembered for Elway’s “Helicopter” play in which he sacrificed his body by barrelling into three defenders for an 8-yard run late in the third quarter on third-and-6 at the Packers 12. It also featured Davis, despite not being able to see at times, rushing for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

Stay tuned to see if Sunday’s game will end up being a Super Bowl rematch.

Mark Kiszla: Broncos' road to Super Bowl begins with Bo Nix's hands under rump of center Luke Wattenberg

Why wait until the 25th day of December, when Bo Nix and Sean Payton need to start unwrapping their shiniest presents now? All I want for Christmas is a Broncos offense that scares somebody.
