Packers RB Emanuel Wilson returns to Denver with ‘chip’ after Broncos cut him in 2023

ENGLEWOOD – Emanuel Wilson once spent three days at Broncos Park but few seem to remember it.

In May 2023, the running back was signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Division II Fort Valley (Ga.) State. He reported for their three-day rookie minicamp but was waived the day after it ended.

“I don’t remember him from rookie minicamp,’’ offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, then in his first Denver season, said after Thursday’s practice.

“When you come in for rookie camp, everything is such a blur because you’re so busy trying to get adjusted,’’ wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr., then a rookie, said in recalling nothing about Wilson that weekend.

“I don’t remember him, but I was injured,’’ said safety JL Skinner, then a rookie, who watched the minicamp from the sidelines.

Wilson hopes to give the Broncos something to remember him by Sunday when Green Bay visits Empower Field at Mile High. He is in his third season with the Packers, and could start if star running back Josh Jacobs sits out due to a recurring knee injury. Jacobs did not practice Wednesday or Thursday and Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said he will be evaluated again Friday.

After hooking on with the Packers, Wilson gained just 85 yards as a rookie in 2023. But he ran for 502 yards in 2024 and has 354 this season. When Jacobs sat out Green Bay’s 23-6 win over Minnesota on Nov. 23 due to his knee injury, Wilson rushed for a career-high 107 yards.

“We love him here,’’ said Hall of Fame Green Bay safety LeRoy Butler, now a Packers television analyst in Wisconsin. “He’s quick and he’s good at leaning forward in the pile.”

Wilson has been vocal about believing the Broncos made a mistake in giving him such a short look. Before the Packers came to Broncos Park for a joint practice in August 2024, he told reporters, “The Broncos cut me so I’m going in there with a different mindset, prove a point to them.”

On Thursday in Green Bay, Wilson was more restrained.

“I ain’t worried about that no more,’’ he told reporters when asked about wanting to get revenge on the Broncos. “That’s long gone but I still keep that chip right there.”

Wilson said he will be prepared for whatever his role is on Sunday. Even if Jacobs plays, Wilson is still expected to get some carries and be thrown some passes.

“I still got that confidence, whether they give me the ball a lot,” he said. “If they don’t, hey, I’m going to go out there and do what I do.”

Meanwhile, those with the Broncos know what he has done in Green Bay, even if they don’t remember anything he did in Denver.

“I’m glad that he’s having some success,’’ Lombardi said. “It’s always good. We always tell players that everyone’s here and we can only keep a certain amount. But we’re hoping everyone can put together good film and find a job.”

Mims called it “sweet” what Wilson has done with the Packers. Skinner said it’s “so good for him” that “at least he found a spot to get going.”

As it turned out, that 2023 rookie minicamp wasn’t a total loss for the Broncos when it came to finding an impact undrafted free agent at running back. Jaleel McLaughlin emerged from that camp and has had success in three seasons.
