Lakewood man arrested in connection with crash with school bus
The Lakewood Police Department arrested a man in connection with a crash that injured a high school wrestling team.
Police arrested 22-year-old Andrew Logan Miller on Thursday in connection with the crash that happened near the intersection of Kipling Street and West 6th Avenue on Dec. 6, according to a press release from the department.
Miller was arrested on suspicion of seven counts of vehicular assault, speeding 40 mph over the limit, reckless driving and child abuse, among other charges.
The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office will file charges following investigations. Miller is currently being held at the Denver County Jail and is awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County Jail.
The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. when a school bus was driving north on Kipling Parkway. The bus turned left on West 6th Avenue and was struck by an SUV Miller was driving southbound on Kipling, according to the department.
The bus was carrying students and coaches from Central High School who were returning from a wrestling tournament, according to a press release from the Mesa County School District 51.
There were four people inside of the SUV, including Miller.
A total of 16 people, from both the bus and the SUV, were taken to hospitals in the area following the crash, police said. Family members of some of the victims told the Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News, that their injuries ranged from stitches to broken bones.
Several victims from the suspect’s SUV and the school bus remain in the hospital, police said.
“It is believed that speed played a major role.”
