Armed suspect dead after 8-hour standoff with police in Greeley
An armed suspect allegedly killed himself in Greeley after an eight-hour standoff with police.
The Greeley Police Department initially responded to a home in the 4700 block of 29th Street around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release.
The department had received a report from a woman that a man had assaulted her within her residence with a shotgun. The woman then escaped before police arrived.
The department has not identified the relationship between the victim and suspect.
A shelter-in-place was ordered for a three-block radius around 9 a.m. while the department’s Crisis Negotiation Unit attempted to communicate with the man. The man had barricaded himself in the home and eventually stopped talking to responders.
The department’s SWAT team eventually entered the home around 5 p.m. and found the 53-year-old man dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the department.
The Weld County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the suspect after an investigation.
